    Mot time = Fail :(

Just got back from the mot station and as I half expected my qts has failed. it's been knocking over bumps for a while so expected one of the front bushes to of gone.

According to the mot tester it's the upper front arm on the drivers side that needs replacing as the ball joints are worn. Are there any brands to avoid when replacing this or is it audi only? Haven't got a lot of cash to throw at it currently

its also failed on the near side cv joint gaiter being damaged with half of it missing.

I have a mate doing the work but how much will I be looking at in parts?

Buy Meyle or Lemforder, nothing else.

Best value is to buy the whole control arm kit, but if you just buy the one arm i expect it'll be around £50.

In my experience, its never just one balljoint, they'll all be at deaths door, hence buying the full kit.

CV boot is around £15. You'll need to strip the CV down and thoroughly clean it, or it'll fail even with a new boot.

Cheers. Will have to buy the one arm for now and get the full kit at a later date due to funds. Can always sell on the arm I don't use.

To replace the gaiter does the whole hub etc have to be removed or is it easier than that ?

Hmm depends on which side it is. One side you can wiggle the shaft out without removing the hub. The other side you really need to split the pinch bolt and tip the hub forwards to give you some extra room to get the shaft out.

It's on the passenger (near side) Sod's law that'll be the tricky one

Passenger side is the easy one

and tbh there fairly straight forward have a look in the 'what have you done today' thread ive listed the seller in there iirc if not drop us a pm and ill fire the part number and seller i used bought 2 fronts as the drivers started to weep not long after the passenger one split got them for £36 delivered and they were good quality poly plastic ones, just make sure when you thoroughly clean them everything goes in the same way it came out as the bearing race and innne splined bit only go one way but they can be put in backwards before you take the inners out blast the grease out with brake cleaner and mark it with tip ex or something similar maybe a centre punch on the top wear theres no contact.

As aragorn said do the full kit if your thinking of doing the full kit buy a control arm on the cheap to get it passed then your not shelling out on a meyle one you will get in the kit anyway, but to be fair the meyle are more or less the same price as some of the 'not recommended' brands to go for !!

Not too horendous to sort mate. Do yourself a huge favour though if you can't do the full set and at least replace both uppers on that side, if one is dead the other will be very close behind.

Here's mate. Will have to be just enough to get it through the mot and then do the others after pay day. Just spent a small fortune on my Nissan <img src="http://cdn.as-static.com/vb/images/smilies/unhappy.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Unhappy" smilieid="315" class="inlineimg">

Cheers again for the advice guys, need some more though

to replace the top arms do you need to remove the uprights etc? There doesn't look like enough room to get the bolt out because of the strut tower

Dont drop the upright fully remove the top pinch bolt and TRE, undo the lower shocker bolt then undo the 3 upper perch bolts under the bonnet and it should wiggly out with the arms attached to the perch !!

If your going to tighten it on the floor position the arm in the 'loaded' position or finger tighten and when on car put the upright when all bolted up under load to normal ride height then tighten your upper arms !!

Re test today. Well it never made it. We noticed while fitting the gear gaiter that the outer cv joint was a bit tired and that the spring clip that retains the cv joint was beyond its best. When driving to the mot part of it failed and I lost all drive. Hopefully it's just the little spring clip as its cheap but if not ill be looking at a new driveshaft

Don't suppose you remember how much the shaft cost do you?

Bodging things doesn't pay that's for certain. We thought that we'd fixed it but guess not

2.8 quattro front shaft will fit too, and might be a little easier to find.

    Awesome. Cheers guys.

Fingers crossed its just the spring clip as when it came apart yesterday it was in two pieces. The spines were all fine also luckily

its all been stripped, cleaned and repacked with a new spring clip which seems to of done the job. Will find out soon no doubt..
