Service light won't reset

I can't get the service light on my 1999 a4 to reset.

I have tried;
press and hold trip reset
turn ignition on
pull left binacle / clock button out

its a TQS with the white dials and a digital clock.

doesn't always work you might need vcds to reset it

Slap VCDS on it.

Damn, I dont have VCDS.

I have got an ELM327 wifi adapter, and a cheap ebay lead, but have never managed to get either to do anything. Maybe its time to invest in a setup.
