    2.8 overheated now no heating

    Need some advise guys asap

i was driving round today for about 3/4 hour with no problems etc then i suddenly hear a beeping and look down and dis is flashing a big red thermometer and the temp was 120c, so i pull over and steam if flying out the side the bonnet.

so i check the fans and they both on, so i wait for it to cool a bit then drive slowly home with the heating on full to sap some of the heat, which worked but you could hear the pipes were bubbling from under the dash.

i pop the bonnet at home and its still bubbling and the pipes are very hard so i release a bit of the pressure and let it cool down again until it gets to the 90c im used to seeing.

BUT now i have no heat coming out the heater, and when i pull the pipe of the back of the matrix where you can bleed it theres no water, and it doesnt appear to be being pumped round and the main radiator is also cold or just luke warm.

Also when its ticking over i can now hear a strange noise that i cant describe or work out where its coming from

Ideas? im thinking water pump but hoping its not.

Sounds like the water pump, I would avoid running the engine for any length of time to limit further damage if any.

    i'd say pump impeller too

mine went on the 1.8T, though i caught it before it beeped as i noticed the temp guage move past 90.

Drove home with heater on full and engine rpms as low as possible and fitted a new pump and its been fine since.

well i was thinking of getting rid of so maybe this is the time.

mine was way past 90 it was right up to the 120c, so knowing my luck i will have damaged something else.

probably just going to just px it now or strip it shame I've had it 7years+

but parts going to cost me £300+ and I don't have time or confidence or tool to lock cams etc and then I could do It all and find something else wrong, and got to think about value of car

I've just tried it again and seems to start and run ok but guess ill never know

If it is the pump then it will start and run ok it's only when you get some heat and load onto the engine that the problem will occur, if the impeller or pump is really B*****D then the camblet will flop around and eventually sh*g itself, you could pop off the belt covers and check then tension, shame to break it looks a lovely car.

ok i checked it this morning and started it for just about 30seconds and i noticed that both the viscous fan and the 2nd fan were spinning even when it was stone cold.

I am so p**see of as i just fixed all the little niggles after i decided i was going to keep it seeing as ive not had a thing really go wrong in over 7 years and now this, and im just not well enough at the moment to even consider tackling it and just worried about paying garage big money to sort only to find other issues later.

so i will either just get rid of it at a breakers etc or see if local garage wants it, but its going to go im afraid

If you get rid of it at a breakers they will give around £150 irrespective of what make it is, why not park it up off road and wait until you are well enough to tackle it's problems, is there a good audi specialist anywhere close to you??

I think my concern is that I pump x amount fitting new pump themorstat belts etc , then find something like head gasket gone

also wondering why the 2nd fan is now spinning all the time as well as the viscous fan

I've had my money worth out the car and it owes me nothing

2nd fan will run if the AC is switched on.

Viscous fan runs all the time anyway, its driven off the engine.

You might as well break it yourself i am sure there is ready market for all the good stuff, or just park it up and keep it for when you feel better.

ok I've had 2 friends over who both said I'd be stupid just to scrap it as its in mint condition and I've had it so long and know the whole history as I knew previous owner etc, and I've put so much time in keeping it like it is.

so I'm going to repair it, I've priced parts and get it all for around £200 so I'm going to try strip it tomorrow with their help but I will need to source the tool to lock the cams etc.

I didn't realise the fan spins whilst aircon is on, thanks for that one thing I not got to worry about lol

ok need some answers to couple quick questions before i go ordering stuff

my engine code is APR but all the kits to fit that on eurocarparts dont come with a hydraulic tensioner, so is one fitted and do i need to replace it .

also when i have been reading about fitting a new cambelt several people have said you need to loosen the cam sprokets before fitting the belt, is this right and how do you do that if you got the cam locking tool in place as you wont get a sprocket tool on if the cam lock is still on?
