getting to the bottom of power and fuel problems

    ok so my car....

a4 b5 quattro sport. with a ajl engine

it runs good, no problems what so ever, apart from a small fluctuation at idle.

it does run ok but mpg is out the window, sometimes £30 lasting just 100 odd miles. and theres no real loos of power, just lack of it. pulling away is good but after that its slow! i mean compared to a friends golf 150hp 1.8t any way!

so im looking about the engine as i was cleaning it and
lookied and my fpr and its 4bar!, the turbo is a k03-029 and i believe the sport quattro should have a ko3s

the car seems to have no were near 180bhp its slower or feels slower then my mk3 golf gti!

the car runs 18psi, no boost spikes and levels to 10 ish psi after 5k as expected but looking at logs and expected boost, its almost like the car is wanting for more

almost like its mapped for a bigger turbo

how can i tell if its been chipped, and if its been mapped for a bigger turbo and someones slapped any old k03 on there to keep the big turbo,

im right by saying even the sport shouldnt have a 4bar reg, im also sure the bumpers been trimmed for a fmic, again not there.

whats the best way to figure this out and what can i look at int he enigne bay to find out? also i think i might have 2.0t coils on aswell?

is it even posible for a k03 to run on a bigger turbo map? ie a k03 hybrid or even a k04?

Hi Mate, Im far from an expert but after all the reading ive been doing over the last week Im sure the 1.8TQS comes with a 4 bar FPR as standard? I dont know about the turbo and map ect but im sure someone else will offer there wisdom.

well apr reckon that a 4.5bar is an upgrade along with injectors and k04. im sure 3bar is norm, even a s3 runs 3bar iirc

getting to the bottom of power and fuel problems

The 4bar is the standard fpr in the a4's.

It wouldn't surprise me if someone had indeed removed the turbo, as it seems thy have taken the FMIC off it stands to reason.

The k03 would run on a "bigger turbo" map but would under boost and you would be running very rich, is there a strong smell of petrol from the exhaust? Or possibly have vcds and could look at the fuel trims? If they are high in the minus figures (or should that be low), then there is a good chance the ecu is mapped for a bigger turbo and the ecu is pulling fuel in an attempt to hit stoich.

    Hope that helps a bit?

yer a little. also when fixing my gasket (before doing exhaust) the cat looks very furred up and clogged,

yer not to much of a smell. it dont pop that much,

what block is that on? i only got lite, so up to block 25

i boost to a steady 18psi. but it doesnt have a on boost sound. so wonder if im just getting 100% duty cycle on the wastegate/n75v

All A4's have a 4 bar regulator as standard.

If your getting 18psi on the guage, then your getting 18psi, so theres no need to look at n75 duty.

The question is why your not getting 18psi's worth of performance.

If you thought the cat was blocked up, then thats possibly the reason, as a choked exhaust will stop the engine breathing. You can do a quick and dirty test by slackening off the cat to turbo bolts so theres a gap, and taking it for a (very short!) drive to see if its any better.

Might be worth logging airflow to see if that makes sense.

yer im also leaning towards clogged cat as its blown out the gasket twice between turbo and cat.

if it is, is there any way of flushing it though? thinking petrol but also thinking this will damage the presios metals and damage the ceramics.
or is thre no way and time to decat for now, while i order a 200 cell cat?

i should have got a picture but thought nothing of it.

i must say when it got to a point were it was blowing badly i felt a pick up in acceleration on the pull away, but of course wasnt much and got bad mpg obviously due to wrong lambda/o2 readings

it looks a bit like this
    http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/9524/dsc01585eu9.jpg

if you look down the holes head on the holes look fured up, cant explain it any other way!

if the car is over fueling on the wrong map. then thats going to damage the cat conv.

Its not going to overfuel even if it was mapped for a bigger turbo, so long as the MAF and injectors are correct.

If they werent correct and were out far enough to cause a problem, you'd get a fault code relating to the fuel trims.

Another thing to try which may be easier, is to whip the lambda sensor out (and unplug it). If it then pulls better, you can be fairly sure its a blocked cat.

ok so heres what i found,

16486 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70): Signal too Low
    P0102 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

now i know why this is, i unplugged it to lend it to a friend to solve a low boost problem.
i then started it with his and found his maf threw a code on mine and his. and forgot to clear.

16500 - Engine Coolant Temp. Sensor (G62): Implausible Signal
    P0116 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

had this once before. some 5 odd months ago i cleared it and it went away. so maybe just change it before it does fail. just got to find it!

i scan my car every other week or so, but the usual code is boost limit exceeded, warrenty viod lol

so ive cleared those codes and it might be just my mind messing me about but it seems to pick up quicker then this morning,

very strange. any way the gasket is blowing again, but then it was one i bodged from a bit of 3mm sheet metal while i waited for audi to order. got those this morning so going to swap over the cat for test pipe. then take a deeper look at the cat.

still boosting 18psi. its all very strange to me.! going to scan tomorrow before decat, also going to try find the coolant sensor.
im guessing its not the dash sensor but the one for the ecu.

    cheers

Dont condemn the coolant sensor just yet!

Implausible signal often means your thermostat is faulty.

so over last few days (since friday) ive done 120 miles (45 of that motorway miles at 70mph)
so i filled up £35 friday and done a favor for a family member up the motor way, i filled up £10 both costing £1.39.9

so im now pretty much empty and the cars drank 32 liters. making that 17mpg

would a dirty fuel filter do this? any other reasons why?
logs say 37.5 l/h which i cant find any conversion on google!

what else can i check for such poor mpg

    genreally i do 80 miles a week on £30 (21.4 L )

Working out accurate fuel consumption from dribs and drabs isnt very easy.

Brim the tank and reset the trip, drive for a while, the brim the tank again, that way you've got an exact amount of fuel, and distance covered and you can figure out an accurate MPG.

That said, those figures are WAAAY below normal. 80miles out of 21.4L is 17mpg as well as your previous calculations. The car should be doing double that on the motorway, and mid 20's around town.

It could be a faulty MAF, try unplugging it and seeing if the car drives any better.

Have you checked the fuel trim blocks to see if you've got a lot of adjustment going on?

Does the car properly warm up to 90c and stay there? have you confirmed the coolant sensor is OK by viewing the live coolant temp in VCDS?

Yer it warms up to 90 and vcds says its nearly te same last time i looked. Ill do another check later
what block is for fuel trim? Can only go to block 25.
Also the car wont run with no maf. It starts and then cuts out 5 seconds later.

ill post back, i cant check fuel trims its on block 032. so will have to wait 2 weeks till i regester vcds lite
regested sharware is good enough for what i need,

am i open to all block and adaptations on regestered lite?

so if i unplug maf while running whould the revs drop and the engine find it hard to idle? ill also run another scan and report back.

i'm fairly sure its not on 32 on ours, we dont get much higher than 25ish. 32 is an ME7 block.

7 rings a bell, but just flick thru and look for lambda compensation

so quickly scanned the car before i went to get kids,
    this came up again
    VCDS-Lite Version: Release 1.0
    Wednesday, 13 March 2013, 15:17:46:0
Control Module Part Number: 8D0 907 558 DA
    Component and/or Version: 1.8L R4/5VT MOTR HS D01
    Software Coding: 04201
    Work Shop Code: WSC 06325
    3 Faults Found:
16500 - Engine Coolant Temp. Sensor (G62): Implausible Signal (came up the other day now suspecting the sensor, would this effect mog badly?)
    P0116 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent Engine Coolant Temp. Sensor (G62): Implausible Signal
00543 - - Intermittent maxumum engine speed (revs ) exceeded, (ive never redlined nor downshifted to make the car over rev?)

00544 - Intermittent maximum boost pressure exceeded, (always run 18psi since i owned it boost gauge dosnt show any overboost or spikes)

just picked the kids up and the coolent temp rose to 90 degress after driving 2.8 miles thats 1.4 miles to school and car running for 5-10 mins then 1.4 miles back. when i left my destination the car was at 55 degress, and 75 degrees by time i left. i only started recordeding from school back.
the temp went up to 90, my dial said 90 at 87.5 on vcds, it then reached 90 but quickly fell back to 85 down to 81, lowest was 79.5 it then went back to 82 when i pulled up at my house,

also i must say i nothiced my tacking was out the other day, think its been like this some time as the inside of the tyre has worn more then the rest. i actually never noticed it, i also get a bad wobble at 65/70mph alost like a warped brake disc feeling,
dabing the brakes makes it go away a little, driving below and over this mph solves the wobble.
im constantly hitting these f***ing pot holes around here im thinking ive either bent the wheel or a steering rod, or something is worn more then it should be,

I'd imagine the temperature dropped because the thermostat is faulty, and the fault code is there because the ECU knows the temperature should not go down once its reached operating temperature.

You'll need to have a longer drive and see if the temperature keeps fluctuating with speed.

I've had that maximum engine speed thing as well, since fitting my new turbo/MAF etc, not sure whats causing it, i'm wondering if perhpas the cam or crank sensor is on its way out.

Maybe theres a MAF fault, if the maf were overreading you'd get both overboost codes, and crap fuel consumption?

thermostat was replaced about 6 months ago, but i will change the stat and ect.

might have to hold out on the maf idea as its never threw a code under any driving conditions.

i did have the temp drop to 60 once on the motorway, but came back very quickly after coming off the motorway.

going to have to buy a genuine thermostat this time!.

any way ill log block 7 and the maf and temps friday. as im nearly out of fuel and payday is friday

how much would bad tracking effect mpg? when driving straight sometimes it sits about 10 and 4, plus get that wobbling so need to investegate further.
couldnt explain any other way so this is how bad the tracking has become over the last week, i hot a few hard pot holes!

My steering wheel used to do that, and the drivers wheel used to wear on the inside shoulder, turned out someone had fitted a non sport spring on the passenger side. So maybe you have a broken spring on the drivers side?
