this is real problem on the A3. the problem (as you may/may not know) is that the micro switches in the door latch-unit fail prematurely. I've head enough of paying out £40 a time to solve the problem.
The switch is exactly the same on the A4 (B5) and I have traced who makes the switches and have a contact email - I have spoken to the UK branch of the company - Cherry, and they said the more people that contact them the more they will listen and something will get done.
