    Question Thermostat opening temperature, is this the right stat for my 1.8T ?

    Hi again, having purchased a thermostat as advised in the previous thread i made im a little unsure if it the correct one.

    Its a Gates item from ebay, (Never had any trouble with Gates items tbf) the listing stated it would fit the A4 1.8T AWT engine, (which i have) but having recieved the stat and typed its part numbers into google, its giving fitment for Fords and Vauxhalls, nothing for Audi 1.8T.

    It also says opening temp is 92 degrees for this particular stat, another site stated 91 degrees.

    Cant find too much on 1.8T stat opening temps, but from what i have found, it seems to b e 88 degrees? (could be wrong)

    Is 92 degrees too much and can anyone identify if this stat will fit my AWT? The stat has 54mm printed on it.

    I dont want to pull everything apart only to find its the wrong part and im left with no motor.

    88 - 90 is the norm, the dia is standard and it will drop in no worries.

    I have a low temp unit in mine menat for an original mini, it was a direct fitment and a 10th the price of the special 034/IE low temp stat

    nothing wrong with 92c

    that said, the gates catalog says you should have TH00188G1

    Thats great advice fellas. I was a little suspicious with the 92 degrees.

    What do you guys reckon? Fit it or send it back ?

    I hate it when this happens. Idiots.

    personaly i only use oem
    i know gates are ok but iv had them fail twice with in 3 months of fitting

    Yes, Audi wanted £39 for a temp sender. So i assume the stat would be a similair price, right now im struggling with cash, i have the wolves at the door so a Gates one seemed the best option. LOL!

    stat from audi is about £20 iirc

    I had a gates one, and it failed early, ive since replaced it with another aftermarket one and thats been fine. Hit and miss i guess

    That cheap!? If thats the case, I'll go for an Audi one then, I thought they would be around £40-50.

    This ones going back anyway. (Just out of curiosity, at what temp does the cooling fan kick in?)

    I havent brought my stat yet.. but i rang stoke audi a few weeks ago for a price, mine's 1.8 non Turbo APT engine... £28.59... G12 coolant £11 for 1.5ltrs
    If i told you i have to kill you, but i could give you a clue and just rough you up a bit!

    electric cooling fan comes in around 97-98 on low speed, and high at 105 i think.

    Viscous coupling should lock up around 100 too.

    All this is controlled by the temp sensor i am assuming. Im going to replace both anyway just to be sure.

    No actually.

    Theres a second sensor in the bottom radiator hose which controls the electric fan, and the viscous fan is totally mechanical.

    Why change the coolant sensor if its not broken? Your complaining about cost, and then replacing bits that are probably fine....

    Ive changed the stat, came today.. Had a bit of an airlock after coolant refill, think its gone now, got the heaters blowing red hot (they were blowing cold whilst temp was at 90 initally after the stat change.), temp needle sits at 90 degrees constantly now, fan kicks in occasionally, needle does not move no matter how long i keep it ticking over or fast idle at 2000rpm, drive it as hard as i like, still stays at 90. Only issue i have is the bottom hose which go'es from the thermostat to the rad doesnt seem to get too hot, its mildly warm, so is the coolant in the expansion tank and the hose from the expansion tank to the bottom of the rad. Top hose is hot, have burped the system and the top to the bottom of the rad goes hot (top) to warm near the bottom.

    Car drives perfect and doesnt overheat, Oil temp is roughly 90 degrees, The oil gauge didnt move previously. Exhaust fumes seem cleaner (less smokey) and the tailpipes are dry whereas previously they would be wet and rich smoke on idle. (i assume) -Its fairly clean on idle now.

    Does all this sound normal?

    Ahh well, gave an impreza a run for its money upto 130mph, wasnt pulling away from me at all, i let off the gas at 130, had a 5 minute slow run home and checked the pipes, header tank hot(ish) top hose HOT! top to bottom of rad, same, hot to cool. Surely, it must be normal ? Temp living at 90 still.

    Bloody hell, so you kept up with a 300BHP scooby in your car, I'd have to assume you also have full interior in your car?. What age/type of Subaru was it?

    Haha, it was a bog standard WRX estate, about 240hp i think they are, 51 plate, whats your view on post #14 ?

    It obviously has a higher top speed but the acceleration.. nothing between us to be fair. he wasnt creating a gap and i had my foot planted in 5th!

    If you look at the heater hoses under the windscreen, you will see one of them has a hole in it. Lossen the clamp and pull the pie back to reveal the hole, and run the car up, burping and refilling until it starts to spit a stream of water out.

    It's then bled

    What a snide little hole that is. I had a look round those pipes today for a bleed nipple. Anyway, just been and done that, car still fairly hot, idled it to 90 degrees, removed pipe enoug for hole to release the gas, nothing happening after 5 mins, put some saliva on the hole, nothing, so fast idled it at 2krpm, started spitting froth out of the hole, let it idle then for a few more mins, nothing coming out, so fast idled again at 2krpm, nothing but steam coming out, spitting bits of water, upped the revs a little, steady stream of froth followed, which thn turned into a stream of water, as im on my own i uppd the throttle to 4krpm, coming out like a firehose which allowed me to get round to the bonnet and jam the pipe back on whilst the stream was still flowing.


    What do you reckon? Job done! ?

    Thanks for the heads up on that bleed hole aswell.

    Also, after shutting off the engine, a little hissing sound from the area of the matrix pipes, couldnt pinpoint it, lasted about 20 seconds then stopped.. Is this normal or am i looking at something else? Many thanks.

    Sounds done to me, and the hissing is the aircon pipework. It's normal
