Fan on all the time

Hi got a 1.8 petrol. R reg. an the fan seems to be on all the time. Is one of the sensors knackered? And temp gauge doesnt rise at all due to this. Help anyone

the fan is mechanical, driven from the engine and will run whenever the engines turning!

Temp guage is most likely a faulty thermostat, or perhaps a faulty sensor.
