    2.5 tdi de-sludging?

    Hi all,

    After fixing the beeping noises in the dash, I thought I'd turn my attention to preventative maintenance; namely the sludge problems associated with audi long life servicing.

    I've recently drained some jet black oil and re-filled with 10w/40 semi-synthetic with new oil filter. A week later and this 'new' oil has also gone black!

    Is there any way of safely de-sludging the pick-up pipes etc without taking the pan off and without using any harsh additives, etc?

    Get used to it, the diesel oil gets black very quick. As long as it's fresh then it does not matter ! I would switch to a fully syn. 5w40 oil and drop it every 5-6k if you want the engine to last !

    If you change the oil 3 or 4 times in succession, driving the car for a few miles between each change and ensuring the oil gets fully up to temperature (ie a decent long journey of 20-40miles rather than 5minute trips), this will clean the insides out without resorting to anything harsh.

    Just use the cheapest mineral oil you can find, Wilkos does some 10w40 stuff for about 12 quid a gallon.

    As Chris says deisels do tend to have fairly dirty oil, but giving it a good clean out should see it staying golden for a bit longer than a week!

    I use Castrol Edge 5w30 fully synthetic oil and it's black in next to no time! I change it every 10k with a genuine Audi oil filter. When changing the oil, always get the car up to temperature (having dropped the plastic engine guard first), then pull the sump plug. Fit a new copper sump washer before refilling. You can also remove a little used engine oil from the oil filter housing using a syringe.

    It will be on 10k changes.

    The issue even on a healthy diesel engine thats run on "normal" oil change intervals is that the inside of the engines covered in a film of black manky oil. When you fill it with fresh stuff, the manky stuff quickly dissolves into the new fresh oil turning it black. At which point you then drive on it for 10 thousand miles making the insides all manky again.

    A few changes in quick succession will remove all that really dirty oil thats hanging around, and it will stay clean for a while. You'd need to drop to 2-3k change intervals to KEEP it like that though i'd imagine.

    Not with Castrol Edge at £35 for 4 litres, and the V6 lump takes just under 6 litres!

    Will there be any need to physically clean out the pickup pipe at all?

    Nope, the diesel don't suffer sludge issues like the petrol engines do...
