visible evidence of timing belt change?

So Number one son has bought himself a 1999 1.8T sport and the guy he brought it from said that the car had had its timing belts done along with water pump and thermostat - now in the end he could not produce evidence like invoices/receipts so Son had to discount the claim and bargained him down on that basis. Is there any visual evidence that can be checked without dismantling the care that the work has been done or not? ( sometimes the engineer marks the timing belt cover with the mileage to show that the work was done) otherwise Son will have to budget for the belts to be changed.

TBH, just get it changed. Even if you just stick a belt on rather than the full kit.
