    quattro rear wheel bearing cost

    how much do you think it should roughly cost to fit rear wheels bearing to 2.8 quattro?.... ive just been quoted £360 for the pair, which to me possibly seems a bit steep.

    how hard are they to change? i do have access to a press as i know they have to be pressed in/out, but just wasnt sure if i had time but at that price i might make time.

    tere no harder then a fwd car being that its a drive shaft on the rear. i havent done one on my a4 yet but to be honest it cant be hard. no special tools would be needed, as for pressing beairngs i would pursume thats not needed its only a wheel bearing.

    so cant help more but my reply is better then none

    2-3 hours to strip it and similar to go back together. Then time for pressing.

    I think the bearings are 40odd quid each for decent ones, dont buy crappy ones, or you'll be doing the job again.

    The rear bearings on a quattro in terms of design are almost identical to the fronts of a FWD, so you most definitely do need access to a hydraulic press to fit them, when I did the fronts on my FWD it took approaching 5 tons of pressure to get the bearings in/out.
    As Aragorn has said , do not buy cheap bearings or you will be doing the job again very soon.
    I made the mistake of buying 'German' OE-quality bearings (supposedly Febi-Bilstein but now I wonder.....) from Ebay that lasted about 10 months/12k miles before becoming very noisy again.
    I then fitted 2 x Genuine ones (interestingly 1 was German FAG and the other an Italian SKG one) and they have been perfect for the last 18 months/ 15k miles......

    ah stuff it ill do it myself then and save some money.

    where the best place to sourse the bearings, and i guess ill need to have the wheel alignment redone after.

    these bearings have had a bit of work though , im the 2nd owener and ive had the car 7 years and ive never had them swapped before and theres nothing in the full history from previous owner to say they had been done and the car has now done 131,000 miles so thats pretty good lol

    As everybody has said, get good ones.

    I've just changed three of the four bearings on her Avant at least twice over the last 15,000 miles or so.

    I now have FAG bearings from All German Parts at about £30-£40 each for the back ones, so don't expect any more problems.

    If you can access a press, it's not a bad job. Some clues are here How to replace front and rear suspension parts (with pics) although the rear pics are a bit limited - I have more to add but am busy!!
    You basically undo the driveshaft bolt, jack up the car, remove the brake caliper and disc (you can remove them together), unbolt the rear arm drop link (use a spanner to hold it against the nut), and the rear arm (good luck with it not spinning on removal or refit) unbolt the top arm, undo the eccentric bolt, AFTER marking it's position (then wish you had bought a new one,as it's buggered, along with the bush), lift up the rear seat and disconnect the ABS sensor plug, feed it through the floorpan, undo the lead cover on the wishbone, remove the hub and change the bearing.
    Refit is the reverse of removal, remembering the driveshaft bolt needs replacing and is a good 5 white knuckles on a 3ft scaffold tube! (IIRC 70lb/ft then 180 degrees turn - check). Ideally you will get a 4 wheel alignment done afterwards.

    Something like the above, anyway

    I bought my Genuine bearings from an obsolete VW Audi Skoda stock specialist on Ebay (again!) and they cost just £20 each as they were listed only as VW Passat Syncro rear bearings , luckily the brilliant ETKA on my PC unearthed the fact that the identical bearing was fitted to the front of my A4 too!.........
    As I had bought a hydraulic press to do the job 1st time around (much like your predicament 205man it was cheaper to buy a press and 2 bearings than to get a garage to do it), it wasn't too much of a hardship to do the job a 2nd time......

    FWIW the one that i had that failed was also FEBI...

    I'd be avoiding those in future.

    SKF or FAG are decent, as are Timken, INA and a few others.

    The front bearings on the missus car are Meyle branded and they seem to have lasted ok so far.

    Definately go for fag German bearings GSF around £35-£40 - I did all 4 bearings on my 1.8T sport quattro, but bought my own wheel bearing removal and installation kit off ebay for £86, its worth its weight in gold, you will never get them out unless you have the right tools like most other things, it can also be used for other bushes,but it did save me masses on labour charges, they did take a bit of getting out though as they were original I presume, once I had done one and realised what was involved the others were relatively straight forward - not for the faint hearted though, there are some decent videos on you tube that I watched which were really helpfull.

    "touch wood" mine sound and feel fine so be glad not to do them while i do the car but if it does then ill be doing it my self

    I fitted a FAG rear bearing. Labour cost: £182, but that included new camber bolt, adjustment and alignment check.
    Is that with or without VAT?
