Hi, I have an 02 1.9tdi with 126k on it. Recently the air con stopped working with the econ button permanantly on. I went to quick Fit as I thought it just needed a re gas but they informed me the unit wasnt kicking in so there was no point in re gassing the system. I know nothing about air con systems but when I look i the engine bay the belts look fine but the air con fan is not working. All fuses are fine, any help appreciated,
Cheers
Mike

i believe if the pressure is very low, the system wont engage the clutch on the compressor to protect the compressor from damage.

So it may just need a regas...

Get a decent aircon specialist on it though, kwikfit type places wont have the experience required, and end up giving you incorrect advice.

Yes thats correct the aircon will shut off if theres no gas/pressure in the system but it could also mean you have a leak or it could just be a matter of a regas. As aragorn says get it done properly where they actually drain the system, vacuum test for any leaks and add required uv dye if there is a leak, and dont just fob you off when it shows a leak or the compressor doesnt kick in. Who ever told you that they cant gas it is a total mong.

You can tell straight away if theres not enough gas in the system as the gauges on the A/C machine will display your high and low pressures and you can diagnose the system with it all connected and the car running by just watching the pressures displayed.

Thanks guys, I thought seen somewhere before that the compressor shuts down when the system runs low to prevent damage. Morale of the story I guess is that Quick Fit are ****

my mates seat leon tdi. they (kwik fit) re-gassed it and it still didnt work... they looked at it for half an hour and couldnt find out what was wrong with it. charged him £45 for the privelidge.

i looked under the bonnet for all of 60 seconds and spotted the clutch on the aircon pump pulley simply wasnt there!!

I'm sorry that this isn't going to be a particularly helpful post, but I wouldn't trust Kwik-Fit to put air in my tyres, let alone touch anything under the bonnet.
Best get it checked out by a reputable garage/mechanic that knows air-con systems and how they work.
