How can you tell if the MAF is defective ?

Is there an easy way to detect if it's not performing correctly

THanks

Usually develops flat spots throughout the rev range (the more violent the flatspots, the more knackered the MAF) and also does not perform as well as it should.

Drive the car with the MAF disconnected and see if there is any difference. If it performs better you'll know the MAF is faulty. Whilst it's diconnected the ESP will not function and and both the ESP and ABS warning lights will appear on your dash. ABS still works though.
Mine's shagged by the way..!!!

silly question but where's is located and what does it look like ??

it leads of the airbox is a black pipe short length with sensor connectors, if you have a turbo that car seems to have a flat spot at around 3000rpm on all cars not to worry about that one

The problem with the MAF is that is can slowly deteriorate over time and can also give intermittent results making a "seat of the pants" diagnosis difficult. The best way to find out is running a measuring block test using VAG Com which will tell you for certain or take it to a rolling road or specialist that are capable of undertaking the test.

My MAF was diagnosed as BAD at the audi-sport rr day at AMD last year. Although it was giving full power on some runs, it wasn't on others.

At the end of the day, I think its only about £75 to change on exchange anyway, so be careful or you could end up paying more to find out whether it is bad or not than actually changing it.

A fault with the MAF doesn't always show up an error code either !.

Loads of helpful info on this on web page as (well as here of course)

Top_notch,
As you look at the engine you will have 3 or 4 black plastic covers with 1/4 turn screws. Remove the one to the left of the one with V6 BiTurbo. You will see a big hose that disappears from the MAF down the back of the engine bay. The hose is connected to the MAF by a jubilee clip (kind of) and two finger clips. At the top of the MAF is where it connects electronically and can be unplugged. You can actually disconnect the MAF without removing the cover but you can see more clearly if you take it off.
It takes 5 secs providing your other half isn't naggin ya...

thanks for all the info.

will make sure the other 'alf is out the way giving me more time to tinker.

will let ya know results
