I am looking for a manual so my wrenching of my dear Tdi V6 can be a bit less hit and miss. What do you find helpful?

I have ElsaWin - I find it excellent and I use many manuals in my professional life.
If you have VCDS, the tasks in ElsaWin relate to the VAG 1550 (i think) machine, but the step-by-step write-ups are exactly the same for RossTechs software.
Once you get used to it it's really easy to use although I find the wiring diagrams a little poor and hard to follow - if they actually load up.
