Blown ECU ????

Right chaps..... I think you are aware of my situation (if not see thread http://www.audi-sport.net/ubbthreads...;page=0#192504 However based on the latest, I thought a new thread with a new title may get more attention as I need something quite quick.....

I have now been told by my local garage that they (the dealer) SUSPECT, the ECU has blown and needs replacing (700 +vat) after 3 hours labour (diagnosis - 80 p/h (trade I guess as my local garage has sent it there)) - it is a suspect and they are not 100% sure yet - tomorrow I guess
As you are aware I have a remap, or should I say, I have had the chip replaced and a remap.... not knowing how it's done, I guess the dealer will spot the Jabba Chip.
I have not told my garage that I have the chip done, but this shouldn't matter anyway I guess.
But will they try and blame it on that ?
After replacing the ECU (if this is the cure for the car not starting) - will I lose the BHP / Torque increase ?
Will they throw all the old bits away and the chip - and replace with a standard chip ?
I am ringing Jabba tomorrow but wondered if any of you have had a similar experience..... I have done a quick search on here for "ECU" but there are loads of threads and I thought it would be quicker to ask directly

As Ever, thanks in anticipation.

I guess if they are replacing the whole ECU you will no-longer be chipped.

Just ask for your old ECU back if this is the case though and get the chip soldered onto the new ECU.

Cheers

Best call Jabba to make sure though. I would ask for the parts back anyway as it may be able to be fixed so you can have a spare.

Re: Blown ECU ????

Swap any ECU and the remap goes with it. The 97 ECU requires a new EEPROM to be soldered in place of the original one as they can't be programmed in system like the new ones. So it's possible that one of the soldered pins is not making a connection properly. Jabba may have even used a socket in-between the EEPROM chip and the printed circuit board - again it could have developed a bad connection.

Sounds a bit like Audi are fixing your car by a process of elimination - I hope they don't try and charge you for bits you don't need.

Re: Blown ECU ????

Thanks Simon, and I'm not being charged for any parts and labour (see my other thread above) - Currently 5 hours diagnosis (80 p/h) and the ECU fitted is....... 1,230 ..... Bet my local garage tells me he's shut next time I want anything doing on my car..

It has been confirmed by the dealers the ECU has gone 'pop' and a replacement has been ordered (10 day back order).
The garage who are footing the bill are trying to get hold of one via an alternative route and the dealer said they will fit it if he can get one.

I have informed my garage about the Jabba chip, so Audi will give us the old one back. To save me a long trip to Peterborough, I have called a local Engine Mgmt speacialist (John Noble Motorsport) and they have said they will swap the chip over for me (1 - 1 1/2 hour labour).

One further question to which I think I know the answer, but I'll ask anyway....... Will the new ECU make any difference to the car (Idling, performance, economy etc.) or are these things either working or not - That is they dont deteriorate and hinder the cars performance etc.....
I reckon it's the latter and therfore I will see no difference - I may be wrong.

Re: Blown ECU ????

Right then - the latest (if your interested !!)....... I still do not have my baby back. The latest is that there isn't a garage (presume Audi Dealer) in this country that has an ECU to fit my Model...... My local garage has been informed by the dealer that an ECU has had to be built / made and is being shipped (presume from Germany) - due to arrive in the next 2 days !!!!
Wow - I was gobsmacked...... So this is clearly a perishable Item - NOT. I guess there may be some mileage in going back to Audi to send the original back for analysis.

The local garage then gave me an option, either have my car back and book it into the Engine Mgmt specialists to have the Jabba chip swapped and he will pay the bill or leave it with him to book it in - very honourable of him I reckon

Re: Blown ECU ????

Why did you not seek the breakers for an ECU as it is unlikely to be a part that will affected by age and probably loads about as most people will never need one in the whole of the car life.

As for idle and things it could be one of two things one you have a fault in the engine I.e. vacuum pipe, DV, or some other fault. Two the ECU was at fault and may be resolved with the new one or the chip is incorrectly mapped for your car.

As I am not paying for the ECU and the local garage is sorting it out in it's entireity, I've left it with him... I guess he would rather not put a second hand part on my car to resolve the issue

What Idle thing - cant remember mentioning Idling problems (unless old age has got the better of me and I've forgot what I have previously wrote)
