    New Water Pump (Cam belt at same time ?) - Thoughts....

    As per a previous post, my water pump is leaking. Had a quote from and non dealer but genuine pump(garage reliable and done good work on car b4), and a decision now needs to be made:

    I think I know what my move would be, but just wondered what your thoughts would be.

    1> New Pump = 177.42(inc VAT + labour)

    2> New Pump and new belt (new kit form from Audi (Belt, Tensioner and something else - the name slips my mind - 150)) = 390.10

    I appreciate it's always good to have the belt done and WILL save on labour charges next time however the main factor steering me against it is that the belt was changed only 28,000 mile ago.

    The 220 odd pound, could and will be spent on something else......

    But I usually err on the side of caution and if it had been another 20,000 miles or so, I wouldn't have hesitated <Note, only doing approx 6,000 miles per year at the moment.

    Hard one that but if cost is an issue I would leave it, I would change the temp switch at the same time if it is like my 2.8 there down there in the same position.

    Temp switch...... Oh right. Are these prone to pack up and what's the impact if it does (Overheating ? )..... nevertheless a good call and something I'll mention.

    I had exactly the same situation this time last year. Autotechnik (VAG specialist I use) replaced leaky water pump and phoned me to ask whether to do the belt, tensioner & roller at the same time. Audi dealer had done the belt etc at 80k miles and car was now on 105k miles. I got them to do it as it was only 115 extra incl VAT (Audi charged me 700+ originally), so I'd query why it's costing 220 more. Autotechnik charge 40 per hour +VAT and it was 4 hours labour in total.

    Cheers Andy.... I think the extra is because of what I said above..... the garage has rung Audi and there's a "Cam Belt Kit" they now sell which is 150....... I guess I could buy the belt and it will be cheaper however I guess there is a reason they sell it as part of a kit (appreciate it could be a money making tactic - but is it that AUDI have discovered a slight weakness somewhere (Belt, Tensioner and Pulley is it ? - there's definately 3 things in the kit)

    Still I would have thought the kit for a 1.8T would be cheaper than a V6.

    i'm being quoted 900+vat for 80k mile service of which about 650 is for new cambelt and tensioners and water pump. Is this too much? can anyone recommened any decent garage anywhere that'll do it for me for cheaper? (even if its miles away, it won't cost more than this in petrol!)

    cheers guys! i shall shop around. i'm sure its a job anyone could do really. Will get the snub mount sorted too cause i'm sure there's a slight movement when changing gears which my mate said was a loose engine mounting.

    The temp switch on the V6 is down by the pump and if it packs up its a belt of job and considering its only about 20 it was worth changing.

    Found a garage that can do it for about 400!

    They said I don't need to change the water pump unless its giving probs but will check it thoroughly to ensure its not on its way out.

    Get them to change the water pump anyway, it's an extra 40, which is slightly cheaper than an engine rebuild when it does seize up at around 110k miles.

    Have mentioned this to the garage who have rung the dealers as well, and they have stated that there is nothing in that area that is worth changing whilst having the car stripped down for the water pump (bar the cam belt obviously - but we have done that conversation). Any water / temp switches are easy to get to to change (15 / 30 mins labour) and no major stripping down.

    So I guess the 1.8T is different... unless anyone else is aware of something on the 1.8T engine and can be more specific... anyway, as ever, all good information and definately worth mentioning.......
