    Engine code ????

Hi all i allways thought my a4 2.6 v6 quattro late 1996 has engine code abc but I'm just ordering some new parts and they have asked me if it's engine code abc or acz how can I find out, there is no sticker in the boot? What are the difference between these two engines and can the code be found on the engine itself somewhere. Thanks guys

The same sticker that is in the boot will also be (or should be) in the front cover of the service book.

should be abc/acz its the 12v engine. i think the abc was fitted in the a4 around 94 to when the a4 was facelifted in 97-98. acz was fitted in much lesser numbers but i dont know why or what the differences are.....
acz is all but the same as the abc from what i understand, what parts are you after?

    have a nosey on here?

ive just refurbed both heads on my 2.8 ahh lump.

thing all 12v v6 2.6/2.8 exhaust manifolds are one and the same.
what does you icv look like? probably the same as any other 12v engine. abit cylider shaped thing bolted to the inlet manifold to the left of the throttle body?

all these 12v lumps share the same components pretty much.

damn good engine tho. better than the 30v imo. atleast when im driving mine im not worrying about it dropping a valve!

Nice work funny enough that's the part I'm dreading when it comes to changing the manifold is taking the head, is it possible to just take it of in one piece or possibly not taking the head of at all?? Doubt it, it is an Audi and things are never that easy, yeah icv sounds exactly the same as yours and is just under the throttle body. They are great engines would like a bit more power but can't have it both ways, don't happen to have part number for the manifold do you?? Thanks

i took the heads off with the manifolds still on. all but one of the manifold to downpipe studs snapped on undoing the nuts. had to oxy/ceteline them up to remove the broken studs.

think it wouldnt be "hard" to remove the manifolds without the heads. depends on how rusty and seized the nuts and studs are.

What do you mean by this? Never heard of the 30v eating valves?

I was led to believe the 30v were the better engines, not just power but reliability, have you had a 30v that had problems?

I've never heard of this either. And with my motor having covered a lowly 173149 miles, it has never dropped one. Neither has the S4 I owned, or the many S4's/RS4's my friends and family have owned.

I understood that both the 12v and 30v engine were very reliable. (bullet proof as some would say)

in the last 10 years, ive seen about 2 4cyl 20v 1.8t's and 3 30v's (inc one early a6 2.7biturbo) drop inlet valves.
heads fell off a couple of them but others snapped just below the collets.

i wouldnt worry unnessasarily, probably just me working in a garage having to fix them, makes me not want to own one, just incase!

There are probably millions of 20vt and 30v motors in use around the world, and i've certainly never heard of a pandemic style issue with inlet valves.

Valve failures on 20vt's always seem to be exhaust side as well, as they're two piece things which have been friction welded together due to them being sodium filled. Usually giving out if your revving the engine to 8k or similarly high RPM's on a regular basis, rather than normal use.
