    Quote for a cambelt?

I,ve been quoted Ł300 + vat inclusive parts & manual by a specialist non-dealer, is this reasonable?
Also if I were to get the parts from GSF do I need the timing belt tensioner damper on top of the belt and tensioner? All this for a 1.8se '96 P reg A4 Avant 77 000miles on the clock.

i think some people have paid upward of 800, but i've not had it done myself-so i'd wait for them to reply! but its also been said that you should change the water pump at the same time too, as the cost of the part is quite low and the labour charge shouldnt be much if any more.

Ł300 is about right and you do need the damper. I'd definately change the water pump at the same time as well as they have been known to seize at around 100k miles and it's only another Ł35.

    I've got a 1.8T.

    Audi quoted Ł350 all in.

Local independant (who I know well) wants Ł90 for labour + parts.

I was quoted Ł350 parts and labour from Highland Audi in Inverness to change the cambelt on my 98 S4, which I thought was very reasonable.

Cononcars, that's unbelievable! Southampton Audi charged me Ł700 +VAT on my V6 and it's not even an S4.

early 1.8 a4`s don`t have the timing belt and water pump linked.

Depending on where in country you are 300 will be ok.

I paid a specialist in leeds Ł250 for timing belts/tensioner and all other belts last year.

Thats damn cheap it- if they do everything for Ł90 post name on here as it will be worth the trip to many! Reason it costs a lot is that bumper etc all has to come off- fair bit of work.

I paid Ł350 in Jan for the belt and water pump for my 2.8 by an Audi specialist in Dorset.

    Don't pay anymore than Ł400.

    And to clarify this...

The delaer told me that on my 99 A4 1.8T the water pump does not run off the cambelt.

I would also recommend getting the Waterpump done at the same time as the timing belt. Should be little if any extra labour charge.

Waterpump failed on my 1.8t recently, quite common on this engine at high miles. Part only costs about Ł40, but around 3-4 hours labour to fit.

    Re: Quote for a cambelt?

    correct.

the cam belt change really ought to have

    Belt!
    Tensioner pully
    Tensioner / damper

worth of course doing the other parts at the same time.

chaning the pump is a good idea as well as changing the stat... (OE Audi stat and seal are a good idea also)

the aux belt tensioner is worth looking as, as is the runner for the air con, small pully right at the bottom

not a huge job to do, but worth doing right!

if your going to do a snub mount, now is also the time to do it as the carrier is off and its basically labour free at this point.

Whats a snub mount? Sorry to ask but even though this is my third car in 5 years I dont know much about the mechanicals lol.
What I know though is that there is no documentation of a cambelt change in the service book and I got the car 4 weeks ago with 77k miles on it, so I geuss it will be wise to get that sorted. So if there is anything that needs doing at this stage please let me know. Also the radiator is leaking a bit and do have to get a new one or is there a way to stop the leak? Thanks guys.

    Re: Quote for a cambelt?

the snub mount is an engine stabiliser that resists the engine tilting back and forward when changing gear, accelerating or breaking... the better ones make things smoother and the gear change more accurate.

not worth fixing a rad really, costs almost as much as a new one, the treatments you put in the water and good as a temp fix but thats all really.
