I have a 1999 a4 tdi, engine code afn and i need to do the aux belt and tensioner. How much of the front end needs to come off to tackle this job? Or can it be done with the front end on?
Thanks

Just done mine recently, you can put the front end in the service position.
Basically remove the front bumber, undo the screws each side on the front of the engine bay.
Then you can slide the front forwards to generate space, not too far though.
You can put some threaded rod in to hold it up.
Don't get caught like I did, replace the tensioner on the alternator at the same time and then you won't have to take it apart twice.
You do need a special tool to undo the alternator tensioner though, I borrowed from a mechanic I know.
Thanks for the info mate, wil get both tensioners done
