Had this exact issue on mine and it turned out to be a slightly iffy brake light bulb in the o/s cluster. Everytime I checked the lights worked but a few minutes after the warning came on again.

I hate the third brake like on avants.
    All them little fiddle bulbs.
I replaced all bulbs with 5mm RED LEDs and wired in a resister. No issues since.
I can make one for any one else that wants a LED 3rd brake light.

I like that idea ,how much ?
those tiny bulbs are not cheap ,so far 4 brake light bulbs and 4 of the small 3rd light bulbs ,
    it is now getting personal
next route would be the bulb monitoring relay ,but not sure where that's hidden ,have a local breaker with 3 or 4 Audi A4 saloons in atm
if any one has a guide to the relay location ?

Its located under the drivers knee bolster big black thing with 387 written on the top. You can see it from the fuse access hole, but unless you have small hands, will not get it out

What ever the cost of LEDs are really.
I've only ever done an Avant light and have no idea what a saloon light look light.
I'm more than happy to take a look at a saloon light if someone wants to send me theirs.

I can do avant lights on an exchange system since I have a spare one here.

The resister you need is on ebay.
    Its a 501 resister for about £3.

I have a couple of spare saloon rear lights here, so i could probably post you one to have "in stock" if you wanted.

I've taken one of them apart, and they have four standard 5w 501 wedge bulbs fitted, so i'd imagine you can probably get away with using a standard 501 sidelight LED bulb that are commonly available, rather than going to the effort of soldering them etc.

That would be cool if you don't mind.
I can see if I can knock something up.

But to be honest, I can't see the point in soldering in LEDs when you can buy some 501 LEDs from T8ups.

I'll hit up T8ups then, see what he has. In the 7 yrs of B5 ownership, i've never had to change a bulb in one.lol

Wrong wattage of bulb fitted somewhere? Or a single filament bulb where there should be a twin filament or vice versa?

Have you actually checked for proper functionality of the brake lights? IE got someone to press the pedal while you inspect for correct operation?

So today ,stripped and cleaned all connections to the bulb holders, changed the 387 relay for 2 others I acquired from breaker ,and that is a job in itself they can't all be faulty ,
Checked all lights worked and ......... on came the warning light straight away ftlog off to buy more of the tiny 3rd brake light bulbs could only get 6 from local shops so still four to change and see if thats causing it (even though all lights work)
not much else to try ,
Would the brake pedal switch cause the same symptoms ?
At first the warning light occasionally came on now its permanently on ,how I miss the OK when I turn ignition ,the beeping is now
    grating
Any other ideas please would be greatly appreciated .

Have the same problem a couple of months now.
Changed all the bulbs for Oem spec, changed the relay, changed the pedal switch also and still no joy.
Only thing I have noticed is that it's worse when raining and only happens intermittently when dry
