Overboosting?

Evening All

My 97 A4 TDI 110 has a little problem. When I am accelerating the boost (eventually) kicks in but when it hits around 3500rpm in 3rd gear it suddenly seems like it has hit the rev limiter and then wont boost again until I switch it off and on again. I am assuming its overboosting and going into limp home mode. Any ideas what could be causing this?
