Ive got a 1996 n reg audi a4, when I start my car up and put my lights on my dash lights dim and the digital mileage clock,when I turn them off the clock turns bright again obviously somethings draining power but any suggesstions what? or where?

Let's deal with the basics first. How old is the battery?

maybe the dimmier is turned down to low position. Try twisting the mileage reset or date/clock (cant remember which one it is) button.

If not a duff battery.

The dash lights are supposed to dim when you turn the headlights on as it is assuming it is dark!

Yup as above Andy is right- there is a sensor in the instrument cluster which measures the amount of light around it and adjusts its brightness accordingly.
