Possible Leaking Steering Rack A4 2.6 Quattro

Our UK 1995 2.6 Quattro has steadily racked up more miles and now stands at 172,000

(What sort of miles should one of these survive up to?)

I have noticed that power steering fluid has been escaping along the steering rack cover on the passenger side of the car. Fortunately it seems to leak quite slowly, so the car is still useable. The pump works fine, so my guess is that the rack is failing or that a pipe is leaking. I have about 4 months before the next mot. Has anyone out there had similiar problems. I expect the car is not worth much more than 800 so this could be the end of the road...

    Help please Help please

Yes I had this on my 2.8Q, it was leaking and dropping onto the nearside front disk which looked quite impressive when you pulled up outside someones house with all the smoke coming off the wheel. If it is the rack then it's expensive as there are no aftermarket racks for the A4, so you have to get a recon from Audi dealer, around 400, andfitting is apparently a pig, so you're looking at roughly 700 in total at a specialist, god knows what a dealer would charge. I'd put up with it and just keep some VAG mineal oil in the car. My car ran out completely when the problem first occurred and the steering sounded/felt like it was going to explode.

    AndyMac,

Thanks for the reply. A can of steering fluid resides in the boot next to the engine oil and other essentials!

Everyone I have spoken to says its a nightmare to fit.

    Cheers

    Richard
