further to this post about poor cold-starting
http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/a4-s4-forum-b5-chassis/137569-tdi-not-so-cold-starting-problems.html

I was checking connections and wiring...
Looking inside the ECU box there are 3 relays and 4 fuses - 2 of them mega-fuses, 50A and 80A

Anyone know what the 50A fuse is linked to?

the 50A fuse was not blown but the plastic and the fuse and holder was slightly melted in some areas

I have cleaned the contacts, used semiconductor paste and replaced with new fuse...
will be keeping an eye on the new one to see if it overheats too -
I'm hoping the melting was caused by a poor contact or badly made fuse?

As far as i can see, the 80A fuse is for the glow plugs, and the 50A one and the 25A one next to it is for some sort of electric coolant heater?

thanks,
electric coolant heater? how odd...
was hoping it was something to do with glowplugs
but 80A fuse seems fine
back to head-scratching...

UPDATE:
the odd thing is - when I replaced this fuse with a new one and cleaned + silicon semiconductor pasted the contacts...
the car starts fine, and sounds smoother whilst engine is cold!
less vibration or run-on when turning the ignition off too.

I did also put silicon semiconductor paste onto the contacts of the relays in the ECU box,

but all seems ok for the last few days

worth checking if you have starting issues on a TDi AFN I'd say...
