I went in the other day for wheel alignment, and was told I had play in the passenger side of my steering rack.
I had a look with the guy, and there is definitely play that appears to be from the rack, and not from the bushings/bearings as I could see the rack arm moving with the wheel. The other side has no play. I've not come across a rack wears on one side only before, so:-

Is this common, and is it the rack, or something else?
Assuming a rack, can I repair it, or is it new rack time?

You need an inner tie rod, nothing terminal at all. About £30 aftermarket or £60 OEM.

I'm very surprised the mechanic couldn't tell you that, it's not particularly un-common on any make of car.

It probably is, I'd suggest a change of garage if that's the case, wouldn't fancy that mechanic doing my wheel alignment that's for sure.

Thanks, guys,
Yes, it was a local tyre fitting shop.
I'm surprised I've not seen it before myself - but ho hum.
