A4 makes humming noise at 40mph and above

hi all,
I've got and W reg A4 1.8 SE automatic, the thing is when i get to round 40mph and above it starts to make an intermittent humming noise. It sems to be coming from the back, i was thinking it might be a wheel bearing. An expert opinion would be very much appreciated!

Sounds like a bearing starting to go.

To check, jack up car one side at a time, and hold the wheel top and bottom and give it a shake, then side to side the same, check for any play in the wheel.
