Long travel in brake pedal .. Help

Hi,
I've got a 99 A4 1.8
The brakes in the car are pretty rubbish after letting my brother use the car for a month while I was away with work , the car stops but not very confidently and the travel in the pedal is a good inch or two before there's any real bite , plenty fluid and I feel it may be more than disks and pads.
Gonna take it to a garage in a week or so when I'm off but any ideas on my problem ? For warned is for armed ha ha

I would be looking at a fluid change and rebleed the whole system.

Also check for leaks and any swollen flexi hoses
