Hey guys
I now have a steering rack leak which is consuming alot of fluid.I have now had enough of spending money on this car!!! My question is will the stop leak stuff you can get be ok just as a quick fix for the MOT???

cheers
Dan

god knows. The boots are soaking and the pipe out of the bottom of the res is wet too. emptys the res in 2 days from full.

Yeah been quoted £575 for a rack and fitting but i dont have that sort of money. MOT is up on the 26th too. Im SCREWED!

I cant do that mate. I might just try that stuff anyway, got nothing to lose.
Thanks for your replies.

Does it have to be a 1.8 turbo one. Are there any difference in different engine sizes?

There is a difference between 4 & 6 cylinder racks however the following engine codes all share the same rack.

AHL, ADR, AFY, AEB, AFF, AHU, AHH, AFN

Your Right next to Bristol there is a place there that will change your Rack with a Recon one(they all do that even Audi) that is all they do all day change Racks nothing else(Steering Specialists)for half the price you have been quoted..

Drive your car to their place go to lunch come back and your car will have been sorted for you..

Let me know if you want the details..no point if you want rid of it though..

By the way the Rack is shot it for sure don't even think about putting things in it to stop the Leaks it's the seals that have gone inside the Rack that is why your Gaiters are full of Fluid..

And by the way if you buy one from e-bay second hand how long till that one goes because it will eventually for sure then you have the problem back again could be next week or next year ..

And if you have had enough of it then you can sell it with the Rack done cannot sell it with out it being done and no M.O.T. you then would have to pay someone to have it off you or sell for spares..

Cut your loss's get it done properly..

Well not really true about the eBay racks, My a4 is still has the original rack and has done 250k and it's still going strong. I've seen racks fail after less than 100k, you pay you money & take your chances.

If you have the original Rack that is fine but overall out of most A4's made most of them would have had to replace the Rack merely because the Seals breakdown they don't last forever..

Mine went after 95,000

No matter what it is there is always an exception to the rule..

Going back to the E-Bay Racks you would not want to pay much would you when you can get a Recon off these people for just over £100 that is exchange of course(they need yours you can have your own re-coned or one straight off their shelf.

Plus don't forget the fitting when you have put your E-bay one in it might go next month but with the recon you know you will be ok for a while at least and I have fitted a Rack(B-----d) job it is you don't want to have to do that often..

I would not say you were lucky doing 250,000 on the same Rack but if I were you I would have bought a ticket for the Euro Millions this weekend..
