Will turning it down a few notches stop it smoking when booting it.
I had no idea it was on the car and i presume neither did the previous owner.
So far getting 50mpg, so i am happy to leave it on.

ok, just a bit embarassing when i boot it on the bypass and leave a smoke cloud 007 style behind.
I know its due a service but am waiting till my missus car is fixed before doing mine.

Yeh, thats one of the disadvantages of a tuning box over an actual remap.

A tuning box just fools with the signals between the ECU and injector pump, and as such gives a very crude delivery of extra fuel.

A proper remap correctly alters the ECU mapping to provide the required extra fuel where its needed, and not simply everywhere.

That said though, Aragorn. The tuning box i used to have on my tdi avant was a bit more intelligent, it used a MAF input to fuel only when there was enough air to go with it (ie under boost).

Symun, Turning the dial down a couple of notches should, in theory, stop the excessive smoking. But as aragorn has said, diesels inherently smoke (especially when under hard load), and adding more fuel will make more smoke...
