Has any one replaced their shifter knob on their B5 auto for a different one from a B6 or a VW or something?
no-one drives autos
If CC's on your unlikely to be changing speed anyway, so you can just leave your proper transmission in 5th and chill just the same
PS: I absolutely, completely and utterly HATE Automatic transmissions So much that even the noise of one driving past and changing gear gives me rage!
I agree with almost all of that............well all of it. lolLol no, they just have no redeeming features, cost you money due to both added weight and reduced efficiency, sound horrible, ALWAYS change at inopportune moments, provide little engine braking meaning you use the brakes up quicker, far more complicated than a manual meaning more to fail/break/go wrong, give a horrible driving dynamic as theres a bucket of slush between the engine and the wheels, encourage lazy drivers to be even lazier etc etc.
going up and down hill is when it happens mainly. Why would it change gear while on CC? Unless you've hit resume at a low speed or perhaps held + for a while?
It does that a little bit but not that bad. revs to 4k no 5k.Theres another negative, in our car i click the CC up 10mph and the car just smoothly applies throttle and accellerates, in an auto it'll apply throttle, decide that instead of just accellerating in 5th you actually/maybe/probably want 3rd, downshift, send the revs up to 5k for 2 seconds while it accellerates the 10mph, then shifts back into 5th again, turning it into a horrible jerky noisey fuel wasting experience.
BMWs do have a very good auto box. They tilt sensors, if your going down hill it will hold it in gear.Never been in a B5 auto, but was in an E90 BMW recently, which had a superfancy tiptronic thing. In full tip mode it wasnt toooo bad (but then if your going to spend all your time changing gear anyway, you may as well have fitted a standard manual box), but in auto it liked to change gear all the ****** time. Every time the guy reached for the cruise stalk and leaned on + it would drop about 3 gears and wind the engine round to the red line as though it felt it imperative that it use every single available horsepower to get the car to increase speed by 5mph. It did have a REALLY cool feature whereby if you leaned on - it would apply the brakes to slow the car down, by itself!
You willing to source the new parts and fit them to my OCD standards?Park it outside mine for 20mins and i'll break it for you, so you can then fit a proper transmission and an extra pedal
Sports mode would do that.Maybe it was in "sport" mode or something which made it act so stupid, but still it was rubbish, and my journey home would have been much smoother in a manual
Bahh, Half a job bob.I didnt say i was going to fit the manual box, just break the Auto one so you have to replace it
Well I love auto boxes and the way they change gear ! Beats rowing the car along with the gear lever any day ! That's why my B5 is auto. Having said that I don't suppose Aragorn will reply to my PM now !
ScottB5 - I want to change my knob (!) too, but can't see how to get it off (no innuendo intended .
