has any one ever converted a fwd to a quattro and would know whats involved?

my mate has just made his golf 4wd via the help of a donated 4motion just wondering if you can simply unbolt and switch bits about to make a quattro.

im not treating this a a cheap easy thing to do, i know theres more to it than meets the eye shall we say

but is it possible???????

Unfortunately its not possible on a B5.

Later models (B6>) used the same floor pan for both FWD and Quattro models, so you can simply swap in a quattro rear subframe etc and gain 4WD.

The B5 floorpans are different between the two models, so you'd have to cut the floor out and weld in the quattro floor, and when you get to that level of hacking about you may as well just use a quattro shell as it comes.

I presume your mates golf was a Mk5?

nope mk 4 was a tdi 150 bhp but cut the floorplan off a 4 motion . ps he is a qualified mechanic and is a **** hot job lol. unfortunatly 3 days after he finished it he did have a small incident with a barrier at nurburg thou :( but she'll be back lol
