So I notice the old S4 is group 20 D. As I understand it, the D means:

Fails to meet the minimum standard of security and therefore the insurance group rating increases. For example, an insurance group 9 car with a code D fail automatically gets listed as a group 10D.

So, what's so bad about the S4 security that they decide to put it into this group?

I dont think the D category only covers security measures etc.

Lots of high performance cars are categorised as 20D, namely the desirability and other factors help this.

It will be a major factor, but will be included with such categories like;

From Wikipedia
Vehicle classification

Two of the most important factors that go into determining the underwriting risk on motorized vehicles are performance capability and retail cost. The most commonly available providers of auto insurance have underwriting restrictions against vehicles that are either designed to be capable of higher speeds and performance levels, or vehicles that retail above a certain dollar amount. Vehicles that are commonly considered luxury automobiles usually carry more expensive physical damage premiums because they are more expensive to replace. Vehicles that can be classified as high performance autos will carry higher premiums generally because there is greater opportunity for risky driving behavior. Motorcycle insurance may carry lower property damage premiums because the risk of damage to other vehicles is minimal, yet higher liability or personal injury premiums because motorcycle riders face different physical risks while on the road. Risk classification on automobiles also takes into account statistical analysis of reported theft, accidents, and mechanical malfunction on every given year, make, and model of auto.

The "D" part specifically means that its not secure enough though.

The new system uses different categories, from 1-50 and in that system an S4 is group 39, with a security rating of "D", and security type "T2"

I suspect the problem is that the security system on the S4 (and all B5's) is only Thatcham Category 2 certified, and vehciles with an insurance group much over 30ish presumably require T1.

Interestingly if you look thru the A4 models, the low spec ones with groups in the low 20's like 1.9TDi's, their security category is "E" meaning exceeds requirements. Group 30 models like some of the V6's have "A" meaning meets requirements, then models from 33 upwards have "D" meaning doesnt meet requirements.

i wonder if you then fit higher approved systems on security they will move the classification...... or apply suitable discounts to the insurance

They wont move the classification, but some insurers may choose to specify that you require certain security upgrades or offer discounts for them.

Didnt know they changed the system???

This nightshift is starting to affect me in a bad way!!!!:whistle2:

DAMN....i must be getting old now, always seem to be behind with any changes lately, even caught myself stating that i only need a phone to make calls the other day!!!!
