    Cambelt Failure?

    Someone was telling me that the cambelt on the 2.8 will fail after 70,000 miles. Seeing as my car has 70,500 miles, I am very worried. How much does this damn thing cost to fix?

    It won't definitely fail, but the chances are high that it wll go sooner or later, and probably sooner. These belts have a lifespan, and when they're worn out, they need replacing.

    Mines' a 2.8, and it's done 68,200. I got a quote from Whitehouse Audi in Bexley that came to just under 700, just for a new cambelt. The parts were about 150, the rest was all labour at 90 a hour, plus VAT.

    It's going into to a good local independent a week today for a full service, cambelt change, MOT & front bumper respray. The parts cost will be the same, but they charge out at 40 per hour for labour (& 28 in the bodyshop). The whole bill will be about 800, of which roughly 400 or so will be the cambelt.

    Do NOT put off getting yours done!!! If the cambelt did fail, a new engine would cost around 3,000.

    Ouch! didnt realise the 2.8 belt cost that much! I moaned about my 250 bill to change all belts [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif[/img]

    But as Jdp says, don`t put it off!!

    its a pity that the cambelt is really hard to get to on the A4. I remember the garage taking off the bumper and to me it seemed like they were taking the whole engine apart! But they only charged me 300 including parts and full service [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]. Mind you i changed mines at 80k, as thats what the service manual said - but i was told its a good thing i changed it when i did coz it was close to snapping!

    It breaks down roughly as follows:

    Cambelt 400 ish
    Service 200 ish
    Bumper 140 ish
    MOT 40

    These are London prices, don't forget.

    70k...??? Supposed to be 80k?? Well at least every 40k. As long as the first belt was done at 40k you will be safe till 80k!

    I thought it was 80k across the range, but I'm sure you'll get at least 3 different answers (even from Audi dealers).

    Isn't it 80k miles for the V/toothed belts and 115K miles for the cam belt for the 1.8T?

    Oops, my mistake, indeed not every 40k...

    My audi book says the following:

    Every 120 000km/80k miles

    Toothed belkt for camshaft drive renewed (following engin versions only: 5 cylinder, turbo diesel engine, V6 turbo diesel, 5-cylinder petrol engine and v8 engine)

    Toothed belt and tensioner for cam drive renewed (5 valve er bylinder v6's)
    Ribbed v-belt renewed (v6 only)
    V-Belt and ribbbed v-belt renewed (4-cyl petron engines)
    Toothed belt for distributor injection pup (5 cly turbo diesel & v6 torbo diesel)

    So basically 80k for the v6... and the tensioners too...

    No mention of the 1.8T

    I have the 30v V6

    ah yes of course!!! i've just rung up my local audi specialist in manchester and it is 85 ish for a full service and diagnostics check.
    must be more to service a v6 too! though i'd still have a v6!! [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/1luvu.gif[/img]

    I think for every car its a good idea to get the cam-belt done at 60K even though the manual says at 80K miles. hey was just wondering - u get the timing belt changed, and the tensioners, and the damper. whats the damper? because it costs a lot. Do some cars hav 2 belts?

    I could drive down to Bristol, have it done at 4 Circles, stay overnight at a nice hotel I know in Clifton, drive home again and still save money over Whitehouse Audi's quote.

    4 Circles offer a collection service, although i'm not sure you could strecth it to Kent! [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif[/img]

    Don't forget the water pump at the same time, as they run off the same belt and tend to seize.

    what I don't understand is why more manufacturers used chains instead of belts. I once had an astra 2.0 DTI that ran a chain, which mean't no need to change.

    Mind you thinking about it. I supposes belts are used as you need to run other bits of the engine with the timing (ie water pump).

    Some one explain to me the differences between chain and belt. As I think my logic might be flawed.

    Water pump is only 35. To get it changed later (if you're lucky enough that it hasn't completely seized and stripped the timing belt) you have to pay all that labour again.

    Only one reason most of the time....cost!

    My cambelt is chain driven though, shame I won't be keeping it long enough to get the other belts replaced [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

    I'll phone the garage today & get them to order in a water pump for Thursday.
