    Boot Thud

This is starting to annoy me know.
Over some bumps, lumps and holes (i try my best to avoid them) there is thud coming from the back of the car.
It sounds like the boot opened and shut again or the spare wheel is bouncing around.

I've check the boot, no movement. Checked the spare wheel, No movement.
Checked every thing else I've got stuffed in the side panels and nothing moves.
Every thing is solid in side the car.
    The exaust even seems fine.

Is there any thing else that I could make this sort of sound when going over bumps?

I'll get it up on the ramps and check it better on the weekend.

    A proper deep thud.
Sit in the car and get someone to drop the spare wheel in to the wheel well but about 2-4 inches.
2wd, avant, standard 16" wheels and tyres.

Had a quick look when I redone the rear disks and bearings. all looked ok.
I'll have to take a better in depth look later.

does it thud on compression or rebound (i.e does it thud when you hit a speed bump or when you are coming off it?

not familiar with the 2wd rear but sounds like a top mount

I've not paid much attention to be honest.
I'd say more rebound than compression.

I'll take alook at the top mounts when I strip my boot down next.

    Thanks JCB.

Its something else to check out when i'm under there.

I was trying to listen to it and work out where its coming from.
but its hard cause it just makes a hollow thud noise all the time.

I might get my mate to sit in the boot as I drive over bumps. lol

I have just done the rear bushes in mine, 115k and 11 year old originals, along with new springs, broke a bottom coil.
Top mounts were in perfect condition, but if you have had new shocks/springs the coil might not be sitting right in the rubber moulding on the top mount.
The rear bushes were as soft as sh*t, and used to cause a slight deflection in the rear when hitting cats eyes and small bumps in the road, this is now cured.
That said, I didnt have much in the way of knocking, but the car feels much better on the road.

Got bushes and springs from Unipart, 12 + vat for bushes and 46 + vat for springs

I stuffed my mate in to the my boot this weekend and got him to have a listen.
He thinks its coming from the boot as he can see it moving and rattling.

    Can you adjust the boot?

I hope you remembered to let him out. That new banging sound will be him reminding you.

if its the tailgate, surely you can replicate it by heaving up and down on the handle from outside?

Not really. It does not seem to move that much, plus i'm paranoid of snapping the handle off.
I'll lay in there tomorrow and give it a shove from the inside.

there should be some rubber bump stops for the boot lid which you just screw out further to stop the bumping
