What on earth is this in my A4 engine bay!?

But its glass and gets diesel in it!

or a pump
iv had a few diesels and never seen 1

I think its a pump but wonder why its there, im thinking mayb the fuel pumps failed and they put that there as an alternative

I'd say it's a lift pump with water trap. It's not supposed to be there, it's been added.

What engine do you have? 1.9 or 2.5?
