on my 2.8 quattro, when the climate control is set to any kind of hot temperature, the most i get is barely lukewarm air coming out. Any idea what could cause this please guys?

usualy means there is not enough heat in the engine coolant, does the water temp gauge get up to temp approx 90deg? If not then may be the thermostat. Sorry not familiar with your engine so not sure how hard to change. If it does get up to temp like mine did then you can double check the temp with vcds. If defo hot then i'd advise a coolant flush as it sorted mine, used 2 part holts flush from halfords then refilled with G12+ from dealer and bled system to make sure heater matrix filled. Hope that helps

Mine did the opposite, always hot regardless of the setting, and it was the temperature vent flap motor which had failed.

If you view the diagnostics on the climate panel theres one called "temperature flap malfunction count", on mine this was wildly climbing.

Hold recirc then press the upwards arrow.

Display will show "1c"

you can then use temp + and - to change the number shown.

Change it so it displays 32c, then press recirc again, and it will show you the error count for the temperature flap.

You can also use 49c to display the actual coolant temperature, rather than the fake one shown on the dash.

I guess thats a start, and implies the flap motor is fine.

did you check 49c?

I'd be tempted to try a flush as posted above, and/or check for an airlock in the matrix using the bleed hole.

THe 49 one came up with 22.something. ok mate thanks for your help I'll stick it in for a flush when I get a chance

ok mate have to wait till i got it back as its at my mates garage while he investigates the misfire. will keep you posted :)

sorry to hijack thread but is there a definitive list of the codes used to interrogate the hvac and the codes it gives back?

reason i ask is my vcds keeps timing out trying to connect to the hvac controller so i'm trying to attack it from a different angle!

cheers

Thats not correct unfortunately.

There are a few differences between that list and our cars. The most frequent i see is that "49" isnt Malfunction count for Speedo, its coolant temperature. "51" is just rubbish.

Theres another page floating around somewhere that has a more accurate list.

Great info guys but can i just ask, regarding 49 and 51 ('99 S4 Avant 2.7 V6).
What are the sensors associated with these readings?
I assume engine temperature is a sensor actuallly located on the block?
What is the relationship between these readings and the coolant temp gauge on the dash?

I ask because my dash coolant temp gauge fluctuates and I plan to use the coolant temp reading on the hvac display to see if it is the sensor or the stat. I alsdo have VCDS so alternatively can anyone tell me what blocks refer to the engine coolant temperature?

Also, what temperature should the oil be sitting at on the dash gauge in normal town driving with engine warm?

Cheers,
Ross.

No, "51c" is a sort of virtual computation by the Aircon ECU. It will often show 90 when the main temp is nowhere near that.

"49c" is an exact output of the coolant sensor that feeds the dash. The dash sort of lies, in that its slow to respond, and displays any temp from 80c to over 100c as "90". 49c doesnt lie, and tells you exactly what the sensor is reporting.

Oil temp will show around 80-90c once the engines fully warmed up.
