Started the car up as normal thursday morning and the red circular airbag warning light (which normally goes out on ignition), has remained on since.

Anyone know why this happens, or most likely culprit, or how to turn it off? Have 98 1.8T with bags in steering and seats

you will need to use vag com or a handheld scanner to clear the error
i bought a airbag reset tool off ebay because vag co couldnt clear the airbg ecu memory fault and the handheld did clear it
so its handy to keep in glove box about 20 quid on ebay

So if there's a loose connection and I fix it tomorrow, the light will stay on until I clear it? If so, won't be able to tell if fixed (if it's not blatent to the eye) Or will it just stay on the fault memory?

yep you need to scan it to find out what code it is
and clear it
it wont go just by cleaning the seat connections
it could be something else not the seat wiring
