Unhappy 2.5TDi tales of woe and fixes

    Hi all,
I am posting a brief history of my 2.5TDi experiences, in order to help others decide where to go for fixes.

Firstly, about a year ago I bought a 2.5TDi Quattro Avant at auction for 1500, taxed for a month, tested for 3 months, for the wife.
It had a couple of minor faults, a couple of front suspension parts, the dead pixel fault, and the concert problem. For the test, I bought a full suspension arm kit from ATP Auto-Teile-Poellath Handels GmbH :: -->, for about 130 including delivery. The parts arrived very promptly and I fitted them, with the usual grief with the top arms.
I would use the German firm again.
I also fixed a sticking brake or two, and generally did some tarting up.
I then looked at the dead pixel problem, but was unable to fix it myself.

I sent the dash to BBA Reman for repair. This action has indirectly cost me about 3500.

It was returned (after 5 days, not the advertised 3) as BER, for a cost of 40ish. When I refitted the dash, the clock was jerking, and the DIS pixels had all but gone. What pixels were visible constantly displayed brake light and head light fault, along with the attendant beeping. I queried this, and was basically fobbed off.
No problem, I downloaded a cracked copy of VAG-COM (Yes, I know, but wait for the end!), got a lead from E-Bay and a laptop.

I live in the North of Scotland, at a remote location. My driveway is a mile long dirt track, hence wanting the Quattro for the winter.

I received my Diagnostic bits, and hooked up to the Audi. We were on the way out for a meal, and I was going to check the car whilst the wife drove down our drive. Not wanting to boot up the laptop until we reached the road due to bumping, I switched it on on the tarmac road.

The laptop took about a mile of road to boot up, and start to connect to the car, buy which time the car had juddered to a halt. We had put a large hole in the sump coming down, and as there was no DIS, and constant irregular beeping, we had no Oil Pressure warning. (Incidentally, for a little extra annoyance, I had obtained a digger at home, and after the meal was bringing a mate back so we could level my road the following day!)

A couple of days later, with the sump off, it was obvious the crankshaft had gone. A trawl of forums and the internet gave me used engines for 1000-1500, 'reconditioned' for 1500-2200, or remanufactured for 2000-2500. For peace of mind I went for the expensive, remanufactured option as I did not know how I could trust what I was getting otherwise. The choice was Ivor Searles, or Vege. In the end I chose Vege.

It's hard to say whether I would use Vege again - probably.
They promised me a fully dressed, remanufactured engine for 2000 +VAT, with an extra 400ish for the turbo, to be done in about 2-3 weeks.
The block ended up damaged, (bearings had spun) so I got a block from All Audi 400ish. I would definitely recommend him, for his advice and help if nothing else.
After a catalogue of problems, I eventually got the engine back after about 2 months, but it was bare, with no belts pulleys etc. I called them, and they told me they did not dress these engines, but as a goodwill gesture, they would stand by their verbal agreement and complete the job at cost to them (I would guess about 500). For this reason only, I would recommend them. They held their hands up and behaved honestly. The workmanship, I'm sure, is fine, and although I was not happy with the delays, they could have left me with a bill for getting cambelt etc parts. If anybody uses them, (or Ivor Searle, as a quick check showed they would have supplied the same) CHECK what you are getting. Many parts I would have expected are part of the engine are NOT! I also think I was a bit worse off than most as a 2.5TDi was not common, and an 'off the shelf' swap like many other engines would be.
I sent the dashboard to ECU Testing, and 175 got my dashboard fixed, 2 year warranty and back home within 3 days. Excellent service

I also bought a Panzer Plate, from Diesel Geeks for about 150. They took 5 days to deliver from the States, when firms in England were taking up to a month to deliver 'next day' due to 'weather!'
It was a piece of cake to fit, and is a well made bit of kit. Well done the Cousins!

Having fitted the engine, (with various faults and problems in temperatures as low as -15 ), I decide to get VCDS Lite from Ross-Tech, as I thought it was a good bit of software, and they deserved some payment. The license only cost $99, so I went ahead.
Unfortunately, the TDi Timing graph plugin for VCDS Lite is an old version, that does not have the V6 diesels. Whilst I know I can go into Basic Setting Group 4 and just set it, I wanted to check the Graph, as the Labels in group 4 appear to be wrong. (I'll look into it and pass to Ross-Tech) I was a bit miffed, but still happy enough to pay the extra money (credit was given for my earlier purchase) for the KII lead.
Well done RossTech/FedEx. The lead arrived in three days! Car timed etc all now fine

A few times I spoke to Aberdeen Audi for help or parts, and contrary to popular belief, they were the model of assistance and reasonable pricing. I will use them again for some parts, and would just say that not all dealerships are stealerships.

The car is now running after about 3-4 months of hassle, with only the radio volume to fix. The wife is happy, and I am skint!

I hope this little tale is of use/interest to people.

Just for your info, regarding Aberdeen Audi. Not sure if the VW dealership is right next door, but in Perth Audi, we have VW next door (buildings are connected) I went to Audi for a price for a battery for my 2.5 B5.... 117+VAT for 82Ah battery, popped next door to VW, got 85Ah battery for 75+VAT, the only difference is it has a VW sticker on it.
Worth checking VW parts dept to compare the parts, most are Passat or Golf bits anyway.

Yes, it's a similar setup in Aberdeen with Specialist cars, and a main VAG stores around the corner.
The main point I was making about them was that the dealer could be a good place to start a parts search, which I generally would not have done previously - I've just ordered a Quattro badge to replace the one some scrote nicked, and they're only charging 13, and sending it to a local garage for me to pick up.

As this has been resurrected a bit, I thought I'd give some more info.

As I said above, I replaced her front control arms with a cheap kit from Germany. Most members on here have found the cheap kits are rubbish, but to be fair, two years and 30,000 miles later, I'm just starting to look at replacing them. Our road takes out suspension parts with monotonous regularity, so I think she did well. If funds are really tight, it MAY be an option.

Having said that, I'm now doing my car, and bought the Meyle parts from All German!

The problem with the cheap kits is down to quality control. Mine only lasted 4 months, but not only that, the play that had formed in the upper balljoints meant that the toe/camber was constantly moving around which totally wrecked both front tyres by wearing them oval and shredded the inside edge!

So i didnt just have to replace the arms again, but also had to fit two new tyres, and when you factor that into account, its simply not worth it!

I have replaced the front suspension arms on a friends allroad last year, the garage used cheap top suspension arms. The whole bushes were pulling out of the arm and started eating into the top alloy mount. As per geometry, the car was all over the place, almost dangerous to drive !
The crazy thing is he paid for genuine arms to be fitted, his total bill was over 3.5k to rebuild the top end, new turbocharger and suspension arms. You wanna gues what they've fitted in the engine ? The turbo also was the wrong model...
    FOR SALE:

-audi a3 (1998 to 2003) genuine clutch slave cylinder to fit 1.6 engines BRAND NEW
-Rear bush press tool to fit new rear axle bushes on Golf Mk3/4, Audi a3/S3, Seat Leon/Toledo, Skoda Octavia mk 1/2 used once

    Ouch!
It's geting hard to trust anybody these days! I'm fighting with seized rear eccentric bolts on mine at the moment - I had 4 wheel tracking adjusted last year and there is no way these bolts have been moved in a very long time.
That's why I said above that I would probably reuse Vege. I wasn't happy with the time taken and service to start with, but at least they held their hands up and sorted me out at their expense. They could easily have denied all knowledge of what was said. That counts for a lot to me.
I was lucky with my cheap arms, as they were not bad, but I'm not pushing it again - hence the Meyle parts. I was just pointing out that you CAN be lucky sometimes! Remember, not everybody has the cash lying for the best stuff, and may need to get it through a test for a couple of months. I didn't know about the cheap problems when I bought them before, I do now.
Front and back it's approaching a grand for my car, with ARBs,additional bolts etc, but with the 4 year warranty on Meyle that should do the life of the car.

    Hi

Where abouts are you in Aberdeenshire?

I've had my 2.5TDi quattro avant sport (aka Amtrak locomotive) for the last 5 years. Fantastic car. Had my fair share of wear and tear issues, suspension woes, oil pressure sensor, sticky brake pistons, etc - but nothing major, touch wood.

Currently on 136k. I put this down to regular services (every 10k oil and filter changes with Castrol Edge 5w30), Forte diesel conditioner and fuel filter change every 20k, etc. Regularly return 40-44mpg or 530 miles on a full tank on A-class roads without a heavy right foot. Hit start-stop traffic and it drinks like Oliver Reed (god bless him)!

Regards parts, Aberdeen Audi are okay. Their parts guys are quite knowledgeable (especially Jim their parts manager). However they're damned expensive. I asked about discount as I buy all my service items from them, but they hardly blinked an eye!

A good alternative is Murrays Direct: Murray's DIRECT

Everything is posted out, think it's around £7 shipping, so buy everything you need in one bulk order. Usually top-brand OE items such as Zimmerman, Lemforder, Febi, etc. There are budget parts too, so discuss with them what you need. Always found them very helpful and cheaper than dealing with Audi main dealer. You'll need chassis number when ordering, etc.

Someone else asked about your panzer plate sump guard. Fitting details here: http://www.dieselgeek.com/v/install_guides/B5PP.pdf

absolutely no point buying service items from a main dealer! Far cheaper options like jason at All German parts.

Only time i visit the main dealer is if its a part that cant be gotten anywhere else.

Generally true, but I have found that they can sometimes come up trumps - such as the Quattro badge was cheaper than I could find elsewhere, and when I needed a single door blade. Basically what I was saying was they can always be on the 'ring around' list if your struggling to find the bit. It's Alan, in the 'domestic' section I use, and he's really helpful. You hear a lot about higher-and dealerships treating folk badly, but Aberdeen Audi parts make the effort. All German are very good, as many members on here have said.

Aye, things like the quattro badge and the door blade are things that fall firmly under the "dealer only" category. IE they cant really be got from any OEM channels, and anyone reselling them must have simply bought them from a dealer (or TPS) on a trade account in the first place. In those cases buying direct from a dealer, especially if you can wangle a bit of discount, is usually as cheap as it will get.

Just had a rear calliper mounting bolt snap!
Had to go to work, so called Aberdeen Audi. One bolt at 58p, the other one at £1.88, I ordered 2 of each, total order value about a fiver. They didn't have stock, so transferred me to TPS, who had had them in stock, they took a card payment over the phone, and delivered it to me by van the same day! How"s that for good service!

On a less happy note, just ordered another Panzer Plate for $450 delivered (plus some spare bits)

Just got home and that's the Panzer Plate here already - from the US! Once again, the Cousins beat the UK hands down - I ordered some brake bits at the same time (Sunday night), and the delivery is scheduled for about now-ish
