Having a strange issue with my brakes at the moment. I have a couple of seperate issues which may or may not be connected.
Cold weather have been making my handbrake stick on, when i get it loosened it off i can hear the rear brakes squeaking every rotation or so for about a mile. As a sidenote the handbrake is rubbish - not excessive travel, just ineffective.
Under heavy breaking i can feel a bit of a vibration through the pedal - would i be right in looking at the disks or the balance of the wheels?
When i start the car initially the brakes seem like wood, then they are back to normal on the 2nd pump of the pedal and will be fine or the rest of the day. I washed the car for the 1st time in about a month this week and the amount of salt/crap that came out of the brakes when i hit them with the hose was unreal.
I've checked the fluid level which is fine, there appear to be no visable leaks and i'm not getting any warnings on the dis. There is plenty of life in the disks and the pads seem to have a fair amount on them. I'm going to strip the rears and wire brush and copper grease the sliders, does the handbrake mechanism on these calipers suffer the same as other vag models i.e. sticking mechanism requiring new calipers?
Only other thing would be the vacuum line from the pump to the servo - although that would not eplain why they work fine for the rest of the time.
Any thoughts much appreciated.
