    How-To: Heated Washer jets

    My car is off the road for a week whilst the DIS is being repaired, so i thought it was good time to do some little bits.
    one of the bits is clean the washer jets and clean the contacts the heating element.

    This is what I did.

    First step is to remove the Jets from the car.
    I followed these instructions.


    Once the jets was removed....


    ....I start to pull them apart.
    This can be a bit stiff but with some WD40 and a bit of wiggling they soon came apart.
    The first one i pulled apart looked like this.

    The 2nd one i pulled apart looked like this.


    Which ever way they come apart its ok. The mental middle needs to come out for a clean and if its stuck in like mine was, a set of small long nose pilers will get it out.

    When you stripped the jet down you should have something looks like this.


    Now give it all a clean and fit it back together so it looks like this.


    Thats it.
    Hopefully now you (and I) will have a nice melted patch of ice around out washer jets.

    Yeah, i can see them.. Theyre just four times bigger than my screen. Unless its my browser, might not be auto resizing.

    They are big images.
    but if they are two big for your screen then it could be your browser.

    would have be better if you said that in your fist post instead of "picture fail".

    I'll now resize the images.

    They are the clearest images I've ever seen on a white up though! Haha, yeah they are massive and I'm browsing on a 42" plasma.
    Good write up though Scott and a good tip. That's one of the things I like about Audi's is that most things can be taken apart and repaired with a little bit of patience and common sense

    i did not notice how big they was. sorry about that but i've resized them to something a bit more suitable for you all.
    Let me know if they are still to big and i'll shrink them down again.

    check for cables on the right hand side of the bonnet would be the easiest way to find out i think.

    Images were fine for me, or i would have mentioned it.

    All the A4s had em, but facelift are different, they live on the underside of the bonnet. I am going to look to see if this how to can be adapted

    I'll take a look at elsawin tonight and see what that says and add a copy of that up to help.
    If any one has a spare facelift washer jet, I'd be more than happy to strip it down and take pics. :D

    I removed the jet, took about 5 seconds. Sadly it doesn't seem to be dismantlable like the PFL ones. The blue square bit seems to be where it's all housed but it looks like it's been assembled and then filled up with the blue crap.

    I had a try at scaping stuff out and could see metal underneath but the terminal section still wouldnt slide out/up out of the housing
    When i get a working jet, i will happily take a grinder to it to see what's inside.

    I battled on all last winter with constantly frozen washer jets, and the last few days of arctic weather has brought the same misery all over again.....
    Spurred on by your post I had a go at removing a jet this afternoon; but sadly I'm not as lucky as you have been......
    My jet was really gunked-up and corroded inside; the electrical connections disintegrated as soon as the pliers pulled the assembly apart and the central metal block which came up like new in your pics is really pitted and corroded in mine!
    It would be a hopeless task IMHO trying to get mine fixed as it seems so far gone, so on the basis that the other (as yet unremoved) jet is in equally poor shape I've bitten the bullet and ordered a pair from my local main stealer.
    After looking up on ETKA it appears that the same heated jet is fitted to Coupe/80/100/A4 and A6 up to circa 1999 and that it has the part number 8D0 955 988, with a cost of circa 15.
    Hope this info may be of help to others......

    i think you will find the problem is fluid freezing in the pipes leading to the jets . mine as heaated jets but it makes no difference . whilst we are on the subject is it true that vodka in the screen wash prevents it freezing

    Is it just me or are heated jets completely pointless? coz as stated above, if the fluid is frozen in the pipes a nice warm nozzle isn't going to be a whole heap of use. Mine have been frozen up for days now but once they have thawed I'll be putting a more concentrated mix in there.

    Put more screen wash in if its freezing in the pipes!

    I just run it neat.

    When the nozzles freeze its often just plain old ice that frozen on them, rather than the actual screenwash fluid.

    had a go at this today but the positive side connection disintergrated, not a problem as i had another set so i used the neg side off those and joined the wires to make new positive connections

    this is when i got confused, checked continuity of circuit and got nothing, worked out the tiny little disc does not conduct electricity
    can you confirm that pos. connection is made to the disc and then disc connects to body?

    only thing i can think is that disc only conducts below a certain temp?
