    a4 2.5tdi auto quattro gearbox problems

    Hi there thought id see what peoples thoughts were on this problem. Bought a 2000 audi a4 2.5tdi quattro automatic but it has a gearbox issue it selects gears drives etc but once it heats up it loses drive, you can rev it as much as possible but no movement, iv had a hell of a time trying to get a mechanic to properly look at it and check out a few things it could be.

    any thoughts guys?

    Auo boxes are very specialist items and your average mmechanic just hasn't got the specialist knowhow or the diagnostic equipment .
    I would suggest you take it to your local auto gearbox specialist and let then diagnose the problem for you.
    The price for this will very probably lie between free to 70.

    could be low fluid level, or distortion in the torque converter when hot, or a failing pump, or a worn out one-way clutch in the TC.

    As the guys say, its not for the average mechanic but an auto trans specialist, they have their own people who only do auto transmissions and a lot are sealed units now and not repairable anyway.

    Is that you David? If so did you try the tests I told you about mate?

    Hi scott done the vag code reading and came up linking error ? will try another scanner this week and see if it was just a rubbish scanner.Tried the brake test and everything seemed ok , also unscrewed the gearbox fluid refill bolt to check the condition of it and it smelt burnt?

    funny you say torque converter , i noticed a old invoice for a replacement tc fitted about 30,000 miles ago and gearbox repair. I would like to change the oil as i dont see any old invoices for that ever being done.

    I think ill have to brush up on my mechanical skills and get onto the list of issues you said it could be as i think my mechanic is more a me-comic!

    If the oil smells burnt then the clutch pack has had-it as there is no way they will replace a torque converter and not replace the oil... Specialist jobs these are...i would not touch them with a bargepole, much simpler to change a clutch and flywheel on a 6 speed box !

    Aye it does totally sound like the clutch pack is burnt out, slipping when hot, burnt smelling fluid, is it also a dark brown colour on a white tissue, instead of a pinky-red? I would say the box has had it mate, sorry but maybe a second hand box would be much cheaper than any rebuild. Your TC should have lasted more than 30k, any chance the fitting garage would consider a warranty claim on them? Just a thought.

    Big lump of metal to man-handle the auto-box, not a roadside job really, needs a 4 poster ramp a transmission lifter and 2 men to fit one.

    A fluid drain and refill isn't that hard, though you still need a ramp to lift it for good access to the drain plug and pan. If the oil wasn't done or the old stuff was reused (hard to believe, but happens when monkeys use spanners) then it could be very burned fluid if you are lucky, and may just scrape it with a drain and refill PLUS filters as they will definitely need done if the oil is burned and the clutches are going. It might not work, but cheap enough to be worth a try.

    The fact it drives when cold may just be your saving grace. If the clutch pack was totally shagged now it wouldnt pull away without loads of revs and slip and drama even cold. A siezed TC would be a dog and sluggish as hell to pull away but not so revvy.

    If it drives fine cold, try a fluid and filter change first.
