been told you need computer hooking up to get rid of it, something to do with error code being flagged up on ECU, needs clearing with either fault code reader or comp with VAGCOM or some jazz.

Dont piss around with a code scanner, they're useless, get yourself a vagcom lead.
You can either buy the real deal for £200ish, or buy a clone cable from ebay for a tenner and run the software in free mode.

if you need to remove the seats again, disconnect the battery first and wait 15 mins before pulling the connectors under the seats, they go to the srs (seatbelt restrain system) which is part of the airbag unit and will always trigger the error light.

The car will have side airbags, which are mounted in the seats, if its newer than ~97.
