Red face A4 Avant rear coilover rattle ? HELP

    hi guys,

i have fitted my new coilovers to my a4 avant (b5),

the front is all fine but the nearside (passanger side) REAR seems to be rattling. it sounds like the shock is rattling inside the top mount.

i have taken the coilover and shock off several times and cant seem to find anything wrong,

does anybody have a diagram of the rear shock assembly with bumpstops etc?

any help would be appreciated as its driving me insane.!!!

    thank again

    Gavin Bey

What make are they? I know someone who had Koni's and they rattled a lot.
After speaking to their customer support they basically said you have to live with it!
Mine has got Eibach Pro Street S coilovers and they dont rattle atall

the make is jom. i know i know there the cheapest on earth but there good for money. the shock itself dosent rattle its where it is bolted into the top mount.

when you raise the car up on the jack the shock sits where it should but when you lower the jack the shock just rases off the topmount and rattles about. im going to modify them this weekend. weld a plate in so it canot come up through the top mount.

ill take some pictures to show other people witht he same problem and hopfully that wil be the solution

you have fitted the washer/spacer to the top of the stepped bit under the mount havnt you?

you will prob find the shock rod is smaller dia than OEM and you will need to make/buy a spacer to fit the step perfectly to allow the mount to be tightened.

I found some tube the right size and cut a 4mm slice off to make my spacer

From what you've been saying, Id beg to differ!
The fact you have to modify them from new speaks volumes to me.
One thing with suspension that is definitly true, is the saying "You get what you pay for".
Personally I wouldnt trust my life and car with cheap Chinese ebay style coilovers that are made from recycled Chinese coke cans or similar

yeah that sounds like a good idea, u know exactly where im coming from. i was going to weld a plate but a couple of large washers should do the trick spot on mate

    thanks

I know its your car, but are you really happy to fit something that could mean life or death if it fails, that in your own words "you dont trust"!

not being funny but suspension items are subject to safety tests before they can be sold, so giving it all "would you trust your life" blah blah blah means nothing really! just because something is cheap doesnt mean its crap! surely you must agree that part of the price of more expensive bits, do, to a degree have an expensive price tag because of the brand not 100% because of the quality

Remember you are also paying for quality!
How many times do you hear about cheap coilovers seizing up?
Some less than 6 months after being fitted too...

Obviously its all personal choice, but I know which I would rather have!

fixed the rattle with a big home made washer. been fine for a few months now.

    dont all coilovers seise tho?

oh and a good tip is wrap all the treads in tape then smear grease over the tape.

    stops them rusting.

No, they dont all seize! It depends on the materials used.
Do you think its ok for something that is meant to be adjusted to seize solid in just 6 months?
Personally, if I buy something I can adjust, I want to be able to adjust it for as long as Im using it!

for the record i have JOM fitted to my car i didn't have this issue they fitted perfectly fine.

Dest it sounds a bit like you've never seen a pair of jom's first hand if you think they are "dodgy or made from a coke can" they are very solid.
i have dealt with a number of manufacturers coilovers including raceland, eibach, spax, fk, ap, vmaxx and bilstein and they are very much a similar affair.

the ones to avoid are the coilover sleeves they really are a bit dodgy. i had them on a civic i picked up a while back.

what were the raceland ones like as my pals b5 needs coilovers. are they stiffer as my JOM's are only slightly stiffer than standard

the racelands are on a mates mk5 golf and the ride is crashy as he has them as low as possible.
    i can't say i'd recommend them.
i like the level of damping from the jom's they lower it nicely without making it ride like a nova on cut springs.

    Hi Guys,

Just wondering where you guys placed this washer? Could you please advise as I have rattling from my weitec coilvers and its driving me nuts. Could one of you upload a pic of a rear coilover ( or draw a diagram) and show me as i cant figure out what is causing my rattle.
    Thanks,
    Joe
