when driving along when I press the accelerator my grear knob moves backwards a couple of inches, when I take my foot off it moves forward, was just putting up with it but it getting annoying.

is it just a case of worn bushes in the mechanism (the car has done 132k) or is there something more serious at work?

cheers

Slight play in engine/gearbox mounts likely.

Would be worth looking into as can have knock on affects on other parts if it gets excessive(exhaust etc)

yep engine and tranny mounts.

The stick moves because the engine/box is physically moving around under you!

There are three engine mounts, two hydro things and the snub mount, and then two gearbox mounts. I would suggest a polyurethane replacement for the snub mount, as the OE item is hopeless.
