lads,

have been noticing a strange sound coming from the car (2002 sline 2.5 multitronic FWD 140k) recently.

sounds like a droning coming from the rear of car (but could be middle), its gets more prominent (winds up) as i accelerate and then winds down when i take my foot of the pedal. ( have no clutch to dip) and using the tronic gears there is no difference in the drone, just engine revs get higer or lower.

i have noticed when i floor the car sometimes in auto she will stick in 4th or 5th but if it sticks i can change gear myself no problems and driving sensibly she goes through the grears to 6th and back down again without even noticing.

wondering if the drone could be related to the gearbox?...could it need oil (is there a dipstick or warning light) or is the damage already done when you get sounds?

dont think its bearings as the drone seams to stay with the car around all the bends.

any advice on this would be great...would vag pick up gearbox wear?

When was the multitronc oil changed?

It needs changing every 40k.

Dealer or Audi Specialist can do this. Indetech in Milton Keynes can sort this out cheaper than the dealers (Mulitronic specialists)

I don't think vagcom will pick wear but will defo pick faults.

dont think its been changed in a while. i have read posts about it being changed every 40k, however my owners manual mentions nothing about this or how important it is.

what kind of oil do i need?/how much... i hear its quite dear

i also hear its a quite difficult job do you know what the process is?

The cost is about £140.

The process is to get the temperture up then drain and refill.

The service book does mention it. Look at the section for additional work at 40k
