...how easy is this to do yourself and is it recommended to replace the oil pump at the same time?

Thanks

Tom

Come one people someone must know if this can be done easily?!

If you can remove the engine yourself its do able, and tbh while you are in there i would do the pump too

yes, engine has to come out to access it or subframe off while engine supported via engine crane or similar.

It can be done via jacking the engine etc, as i have done it, but the fiddling around takes time, and i recon i could remove an engine and do the job and fit it back in much the same time

Thanks guys think im going to let a garage do it if I have to mess about with the engine, an audi specialist quoted me £420

Id let the garage do it to be honest. Are you going for a New Oil pump too? or getting it tested atleast?

Was going to go for a new oil pump as well so that plus the pickup for £420 is not bad I think.

Can someone please confirm to me that its the oil sump strainer that should be replaced? I asked Audi today while it was in for a service and MoT and they said there was a few different options on the system?!

yeah its described as a strainer.
it can be done on the floor but its not fun.
youve got to support the engine from above really. theres a support beam we have at work.
one of these....
Sealey engine hoist / support beam - 3day auction! on eBay (end time 18-Sep-10 01:27:42 BST)
basically you take the weight of the engine with this on the lifting eyes on the head.
drop the bumper off and the front forward as if your doing the cambelt.
then you can remove the ally engine mount bits on either side of the subframe.
loosen the rear subframe mounts and pull the front of the subframe down and wedge a bit of wood inbetween the gap.
one of the aircon pipes runs under the sump as gets in your way, so if you dont have the fascility to drain the aircon then you need to unbolt the pump 3 simple 13mm bolts unplug the wire for the clutch too and let it hang on the pipes.
theres three 16mm bolts into the bell housing, oil return from the turbo, and all the little bolts round the sump inc the 2 at the back that are a **** to get out/in..........

in fact, yeah, id pay to have it done if i were you!

It can be done on the floor with a trolley jack and without removing any aircon pipes. I have done it.

Will have a search wgen i get more time for my thread

Cheers mark would be interested to see that post when you get a minute....
