!! Audi Main Dealer Price Shocker !!

My car recently developed a problem which resulted in the car getting too hot. It has been diagnosed as a thermostat which I brought today and will have fitted tomorrow.

Anyway, I rang German Swedish and Frence car parts. £48 inc vat. It would take 4 days to arrive as its a special.
Next I rang Euro Car Parts. Who had it in stock but wanted £51 inc vat.
THEN out of curiosity I rang AUDI WOLVERHAMPTON. £58 inc vat. WOW. One in stock so I grabbed it.

It has a 2 year guarentee and i'm assured of the quality. The non OEM items have NO GUARENTEE.

Am I wrong to be SHOCKED or is it really that close in price between the main dealers and parts specialists?

I bought a non oem oil filter from GSF and later found out the oem one from Audi was cheaper.

I bought some replacement Aero blade wipers from my local dealer a couple of months back. They also fitted them for me free of charge. Halfords prices were £5 more expensive and you had to fit them yourself.

My experience is that Audi dealers are quite reasonable for parts although their labour rates can be a bit eye watering. If you know how to do the work yourself or have a good independent then it seems expensive but if you wouldn't have a clue then it's perhaps worth the peace of mind to pay someone who does!

audi are really good for parts, i got a sport shock from them for £80 inc vat.

I bought double DIN cage and it was 10% cheaper Audi than Ebay. Truth is Europarts etc struggle with the Euro rate and work on the principle you wont check, some items are cheaper though like batteries.

I phoned Audi about a missing bolt which needed replacing M8 x 30mm four quid !

I always use genuine parts you know they will fit first time
and yes generally not far on price sometimes cheaper .

The Audi mechanic I bought my car from said he could get a staff-priced Cambelt and waterpump (around £500), so I called up the local indies (also around £400-£500).... and then the local Audi stealers: £795 and £1050!!!

Well, it seems that the Genuine Audi parts are resonably priced, and the factor that makes a trip to the dealers expensive is their labour rates. I mean FOUR figures for a cambelt change. I could understand that for a RS4 or RS6 or and block with two heads but a four pot......its quite a lot I think.

• Major service £249
• Interim service £99
• Brake pads £99
• Brake fluid change £49

* Privately owned Audi vehicles over 36 months old from date of registration. Up to and including 2.0 litre engines for A2, A3, A4, A6 and TT. Prices include VAT at 17.5% and parts and labour. Cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer. Excludes Channel Islands.

What you all fail to remember when talking about genuine Audi parts is that they pretty much don't make any of them. They are all 3rd party with the 4 rings stamped on them. Brake pads, filters, plugs, aircon, electrics, ignition etc etc None of these items are made by Audi so no idea how this "genuine parts" idea keeps cropping up. GSF sell the same part made by the same manufacturer (Jurid, Mann, Bosch, Valeo) just minus the audi logo, but if you can get them cheaper at the dealer then fair play, but I find that very hard to believe, certainly not from my local dealer.
As for the affordable servicing, the cambelt charge will not include the water pump, so ensure you make them replace this, not just inspect it. Any good independent replaces them as a matter of course, but Audi would rather save you £35 for the dubious pleasure of charging you another £349 6 months down the line when the pump has disintegrated or worse, seized.

The cam belt is only for the belt i was told, fitted :-S not including the water pump or tensioners

yep my local audi teesside did my cambelt, waterpump for £400 that was inclusive of vat, and a unlimited milage 2 year guarentee included, oh and a courtesy car included! my backdiscs and pads are getting done soon for 190 all in which if i bought the parts seperately would be approx 85 then the special caliper tool....for saving a 100 and skin on me knuckles they can do it. lol plus when you come to sell the car, any job the audi dealer has done with the receipt is always a good selling point

i need to put a cambelt on my '52 S3, with a 20% mates rates discount the belt was about £80, the water pump £35 and a damper (or tensioner or something) £70!
basically £200 for the parts alone! sound about right???
