clunk clunk sounds in my 2.5TDi :( - Tensioner??

So the day I put it up on autotrader, i hear clunk clunk sounds when just checking over the engine...
Mechanic located it to the cambelt, timing belt area of the engine... couldn't see without taking off the black plastic but assumed it may have been tensioner (I trust him from past experience)...

So, car has done 74000, was selling it now so wouldnt need to pay for the cambelt ((due at 80k on this TDI) this is included in the price I want to sell it for). Doing the cambelt will have no benefit for me, as I don't want the car... So what shall i do?

If he is gona take the time to try sort this tensioner out (I dont even know if he can, we ran out of time today as I went at 6.30pm), then he could spend bit longer and jus take the front end off and do the cambelt... What do you guys reckon...

Patch it up (probably at no cost to me, CAN this be done anyone?? he said it is common on these engines), orr get him to do cambelt... or (Now is where another dilemma may kick in)... Get AUDI to do the cambelt and then try get top whack when i sell it??

Do people mind where the cambelt may have been done? This mechanic i worked a lot with during my mk1 and mk2 golfs, but i know he did a 2.5tdi cambelt on an Avant... mine is a cabriolet... so I trust he'd do it properly.

Very long winded question, but just need advice now... Didnt even drive 50miles back to uni today...

Mine went, no warning and it wrecked the engine, bent valves etc the lot.

I think you need to bite the bullet and do it, or you might have a worthless car on your hands, or at best an irate buyer one week down the line! It's gonna cost £500 ish to do properly, but that will be a good bargaining point on your side come resale time.

Yup, completely agree.... but it IS resale time, i wanted it gone by end of the week, as long as the offer was acceptable...

It all just comes down to cost (as thats the only effect it will have on me as the car is going)... I can get local garage to do it... fraction of the cost, I would be suprised if they charge me £200 as my uncle owns it, plus I can easily get waterpump and therm done at no extra cost.
Or I can get AutoTehnik (VAG specialist) or Audi to do it for £500.

Does anyone honestly believe I can bargain over £300 on the price over the 'place' the belt was changed? Theres audi stamps already in the service book.... plus i know the car isnt in the best of condition anyway that people will bargain me on, I am just thinking whats best in terms of cost.

Its all down to timescale I guess! If you want it gone by the end of the week you must be pretty confident of a quick sale as it's only been on Autotrader today!

3rd Cheapest Diesel Cabriolet on there and cheapest by far when looking at mileage (similar mileage to mine are over a grand more). But at the same time, I am willing to drop the price considerably to the buyer... I have genuine reason to sell it for personal circumstances and willing to listen to ANY offers... I am hoping that adds up for a quick sale, but maybe I am being very naive as I havent sold a car of this sort of value before.... I guess its a life lesson...

Now that I have decided on the Cambelt, I may look to get that money back when selling it therefore making it harder for me to sell... but at the same time making it a better buy... ohh, who knows... lolllll......
