dodgy temp gauge

the gauge on my a4 avant se works sometimes and then not.one person said it's a dodgy thermostat and another said the plastic impeller on the water pump has broken away from its bonding on the shaft.any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

could be the temp sender. i had the same problem and a £20 sensor sorted it out.

First check out the temp sensor, its a common thing to go wrong... mine was faulty last year, i fixed it myself... as Drewbee said, about £20 for the sensor... plenty of threads on this forum on how to do it. on my 2.5tdi engine its right in the middle so just a simple swap using no tools...
