    2.5tdi tuning box

A few people have been discussing tuning boxes for the 2.5tdi recently. I fitted one to mine on Friday so thought i'd add a review/reccomendation.

I had been looking for a long time on loads of different forums for reviews of certain tuning boxes and came across one from http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/tdtuningltd/ . This one had a few good reviews, and was about Ł150 cheaper than their usual price. Plus the seller was local so i drove up there to pick it up because I hate the feeling of waiting for a new toy to arrive in the post.

The installation was easy, it plugged straight in. The longest task was fixing the wires back with cable ties. Took 5 minutes tops.

I took it out and straight away the car feels way smoother and what I can only describe as lighter. (Probably the added torque helping the car move with less effort)

The car still isn't super quick, but for a heavy car it pulls relentlessly in 3rd-6th.

I had about 100miles in the tank going by my trip comp. but when I fitted the box it only lasted 40 miles. I must admit I wasn't driving with economy in mind. After filling up again and doing 100 miles of testing acceleration in each gear it looks to have settled down to the same sort of mileage I would have expected before i fitted the box, but time will tell.

All in all i'm very pleased with the product & would reccomend it to all 2.5tdi owners.

    Nice write up fella!
I fitted one and lost a clutch about 5 mins afterwards. All down to a knackered clutch, but still haven't plucked up the courage to plug it back in.

What make is yours?I fitted an original Tuning Box Co box to my 2.5 TDI about 3 weeks ago and agree the performance is an obvious improvement.I think you might find better mpg too mine seems to be capable of over 50 now and i hope to get an overall 10% improvement which was the main objective as I do mainly urban driving and the 2.5 is not the ideal town car.The only problem fitting was siting the box .Ended up by the aircon pipes as the other side gets a bit too hot .Dont think I would have bought new because you need to do more mileage than I do to recover the Ł400 plus for a good make but I was also lucky to find one cheap on ebay

I agree I wouldn't have paid full price, and if i was paying Ł300-400 i would have probably got a remap but i'm pretty skint at the moment so when this came up locally I snapped it up. Economy wise I do around 25,000 miles a year so even if i get 10 miles a tank it should pay for itself eventually. Now i've steadied my right foot down a bit my mileage has settled down so i'll keep my eye on it and see what benefits or losses i get, if any.

Not sure of the make of the box, it just says TDTuning on the side. It didn't come in a box. The link below has the seller's shop but the boxes now for sale on their site are different to mine. He was selling old stock and mine was the last of 6 he has sold in the last fortnight. (Originally programmed for some form of nissan) They look a bit better quality than those he is currently selling, but probably just the same.

I cable tied mine against a metal bracket towards the passenger side headlight. Already had some cables running that way so it seemed the natural place to put it.

    BlackQuat,
I've done approx. 400 miles now and still got a clutch . But to be fair I've got some sort of engine or gearbox mount problem (fault code and the drivetrain sort of judders& bangs when i set off at anything more than a crawl) so I don't really put my foot down until i'm moving in 3rd or something which has probably saved my clutch lol. Though to be honest I think it would only cause problems if the clutch was already on its way out.

*Next week I will probably post saying my clutch has died but for now all seems well*

Yea could well be. I've sat with people in it and suggestions vary from engine mount to gearbox mount, bent hub, bushes & suspension and now the flywheel.....all i know is i have a persistent fault code for "Mount Valve Stage 1" so i figured i'd start there since it needs looking at anyway.

It happens when I pull away and sort of bumps once or twice under load and feels like the front and back wheels aren't in sync for a second so it feels like my tyres chew up a bit. It's got progressively worse since xmas. I should really get it sorted but I would like to narrow things down a bit before going to a garage and bending over.

Out of interest, what makes you think the DMF? Have you had similar symptoms?

It's quite common, when you let the clutch out. Instead of absorbing the shock, it bangs.

After a bit of reading some of the symptoms sound a bit like mine. Thanks for the suggestion. My mate is going to give my car a good check in a week or two. Here's hoping he finds something less expensive.

I didn't get chance to get the car warmed up to truely find out.
I'll be going out tomorrow night to have a roll round. But the drive of it i did get last night. First thing i noticed was my clutch didn't slip at all. Second thing i noticed, it pulls very very hard.

I too fitted a TD Tuning, box and it makes a great difference, Acceleration is improved and pulls even more like a train now. I only fitted it yesterday, so not sure about mpg.

My tuning box is currently sat in the kitchen while the car is in for a new water pump, belt service and engine mount. Can't wait to put it back on after a proper service and see how it works over a period of time. I'll be happy with 35mpg. If i could manage that i'd be saving myself over Ł600 a year at current fuel prices.

WIth this in mind, I thought i'll go and brim her again.

So, calculations work out at 40mpg. Not too bad considering i've used it for work all week which is a short journey where it doesn't warm up. So it'll be interesting to see how it does on the way to france after i service it, this weekend.

Fingers crossed for a good mpg!

I've managed to put a few full tanks of diesel in since new belts, service & waterpump......i've worked out 420 miles, 460miles and 450miles, which isnt a massive increase from 400miles that i was getting before but averages at about a Ł5er worth each time. After 120miles of this tank i've got about 400miles left in so maybe i can hit the magic 500mile mark!
Main benefit of the tuning box so far after a few weeks is the easy motorway driving, miles smoother (i think, or maybe it's in my head)

My box is still giving me at least 10% better mpg on my 2.5 TDI quattro last fill showed about 460 and I calculated 33mpg and nearly all town driving of 5 to 10 mile trips.Performance is still boosted too

That's pretty good. This tank was made up of some town driving, some twisty A roads and mostly motorway miles and I won't quite manage 500miles on this tank but looks like i'll get 480-490 before hitting 0miles. I definitely think the low 500's are achievable though because I haven't been as frugal as i could have been.

My dodgy calculations tell me on this tank alone i've made back about Ł15 in diesel if I get an extra 90miles on top of the 400 i used to get before the tuning box.

Just out of interest my car sits at about 80mph in 6th at 2200rpm (before the turbo kicks in) Does this sound about right?

I thought the turbo kicked in about 1800?

I suppose for economy it's whenever turbo is off boost, but it's not really realistic in the real world as you'd always need to be sat in too high a gear and get caught out for revs when slowing or approaching hills.

I reckon at about 70-75 we'd be at the sort of optimum for economy and useable performance on a motorway.

You are probably right about the turbo kicking in at 1800.....I just guessed 2200 as that's sort of the revs where the turbo is doing enough for acceleration to pick up instantly if i press the acellerator, whereas at1800 in 6th it would take a few seconds to get going.

Mine works a treat. Its been in 18 months, hasn't missed a beat 3-5 extra mpg, flatter torque curve and more power. Whats not to like?

Yep my last 4 tanks have returned 475, 485, 470 & 440miles before hitting the 0 mark. Previously I was getting 400. Works out about Ł10 in diesel on average to me each time I fill up so it's probably paid for itself by now.

Not convinced on the claimed extra 30bhp and 85lb/torque but there's definitely an improvement from standard. No complaints here!

Yeah they do but the tiptronic box is rather fragile and wont take much punishment without complaining... You better off with a tailored remap where the torque is kept at factory levels and only increased up the rev range. If you had a manual box then it would not be a problem allthough the clutch is sometimes complaining with more than 450Nm of torque...
