HELP... Badly whistling turbo and low MPG????

Hi people

I need some help!! 3 weeks ago i bought a 2004 A4 avant 2.5 tdi sport 180
I am really pleased with the car!

BUT..........................................

The fuel consuption is really bad, 20-24 MPG (steady driving- country, town and motorway)

The turbo also seams to whistle alot more than it should, pretty much all the time, even at low revs (possible over boosting?)
I had the car on a diagnostic machine at the weekend which did not show up anything?

Has anyone had similar problems or are there any simple checks that i can make?

Turbos seem to vary but it should not be constantly noticeable.My sons 2.5 auto hardly makes a sound my manual whistles when cold at low speeds but is quiet at speed and whwen warmed up.MPG is lower in his auto but it may be his driving style in changing from a manual for the first time .Does yours throw out any unburnt fuel on cold starting his seems to?

it is quite lumpy on start up when its cold with a fair bit of white smoke? it also takes a couple of seconds for all 6 cylinders to kick in?

Sounds a bit like mine on start-up.... except mine smokes unburnt fuel rather than white smoke.

The turbo's can be prone to getting sooted up so it might be worth checking that with regard to the whistle, I can barely hear mine in normal use.

Should not be lumpy ours fire up smoothly and quickly but my manual seems to steam more i.e. condensation on cold starts but the auto s is fuel like james and is not good for mpg.I think my turbo is too whistly but its no bother and it perfoms with up to 45 mpg mixed.Seemslike it couldbe your turbos not boosting well and thus whistling and low mpg.What mileage?

my turbo is almost unnoticable except when cold at low revs also. Its a bit lumpy for a couple of seconds when started from cold also but only when the outside temp is down. An automatic will always use more fuel than a manual its just how they work

With that mileage you should not be having problems like this did you buy with a warranty because I would keep pressing for solutions and not be fobbed off.Sometimes low mileage means lots of short journeys which can cause more wear and tear than long ones with more mileage .

luckily, I have got the AA 5 star, 6 month warranty. I have spoken to a freind of a freind today who has dealt withh AA warranties before, he is also a vw specialist and is familiar with this engine. Hopefully he will be able to source the problem and get it sorted. Its just such a pain in the **** with all the phone calls, taking the car to the garage etc etc...... This allways seems to happen to poor old me!!! (no sympothy required!!)

Lets hope so thats what you paid for .If you get any sign of any serious nasties I suggest you think about asking for your money back on the basis that the goods are not fit for purpose.Surely a reputable dealer would have checked things before selling but it seems lots dont bother and its still acase of "let the buyer beware" generally.Such a nice car but I prefer the manual drive but I dont have my sons chronic bad back.Good luck!
